The High Point University baseball team (5-7) returns home this weekend (March 6-8) to host James Madison University (7-4) and start a seven-game homestand at Williard Stadium. The games this weekend were supposed to be games two through four of the homestand but rain on Tuesday canceled HPU's game with Virginia Tech.
Â
Matchup History
- High Point and James Madison have met for three-game series each of the last two years, with JMU sweeping the series in 2018 and winning two of the three a season ago.
- The Panthers have struggled to find offense against JMU, scoring multiple runs in only two of the six games in the series, including last year's 8-6 victory.
- Senior Ryan Russell went 4-4 in the game and classmate Joe Johnson drove home three runs while getting the start on the mound. Also racking up multiple hits in the game were Evan Bergman with three and Travis Holt and Trent Harris each with two.
Â
Panther Notes
- High Point played in the Keith LeClair Classic this past weekend, playing No. 13 Ole Miss, Indiana, and No. 17 East Carolina.
- Holt recorded a hit in each game of the classic, extending his hitting streak to six games. He now has 20 on the year, good for 22nd in the country.
- Holt had two hits in the game against Ole Miss on Friday (Feb. 28), one of three Panthers to record multiple hits on the Rebels' pitching staff. Also recording multiple hits were Bergman and Cole Singsank as part of an eight-hit effort from HPU to out-hit Ole Miss.
- Holt and Singsank both enter Tuesday's game with hitting streaks of five games or more. Holt's resides at six games while Singsank has recorded a hit in five straight games. Right behind them is Johnson riding a four-game hitting streak, his second such streak of the season.
- High Point's pitching staff has recorded 120 strikeouts on the year to lead the Big South and sit tied for 40th in the country.
- The Panthers have turned 10 double plays this season, second in the conference and tied for 26th in D1.

Across the Diamond
- James Madison finished last season with a 31-26 record overall and has gotten off to a 7-4 start so far in 2020.
- The Dukes were swept by nationally-ranked N.C. State over opening weekend but have bounced back, winning seven of their last eight.
- JMU is one of the best defensive teams in the country, entering the weekend ranked sixth in the nation in fielding percentage (.988) and double plays turned (14).
- Nick Zona leads the James Madison offense with a .459 batting average, one of three Dukes hitting over .350 on the year.
- Not far behind Zona is Chase DeLauter with an average of .404. DeLauter is also featured in the Dukes' weekend rotation, and is slated to take the bump on Sunday.
- Saturday's projected starter Justin Showalter is one of just 42 pitchers in Division I this year to throw a complete game. He's 3-0 in three starts and has only allowed one run for an ERA of just 0.46.
