High Point, NC-Â High Point kicked off Big South Conference play against Charleston Southern, the contest went the distance with the teams playing to a 2-2 draw after playing for 110 minutes.
"It was unfortunate to not walk away with a win in this game." Head Coach Brandi Fontaine said. "Especially with the number of shots and opportunities that we had. There are still a lot of positives to walk away with, but it is hard because it almost feels like a loss for us, unfortunately. But that's how it goes in conference play, everything is a battle and we have the next game coming up on Wednesday and we have to start preparing for that one."
High Point controlled the pace for a majority of the first half. The Panthers scored almost immediately with freshman Emma Schossler scoring within the first 26 seconds of the contest. High Point would add another goal before halftime as Ashlyn Kearney would find the back of the net in the 42nd minute. Kearney's goal gave her 2 on the season which tied Kyle Levesque for most High Point goals scored this year. HPU outshot the Bucs 9-2 in the first half.
Charleston Southern would not quit, The Bucs came into the 2nd half inspired, Charleston Southern scored two goals in the second half to tie the game at 2-2. Charleston didn't record a goal in the contest until the 71st minute. CSU was able to score in the 88th minute to force the match to overtime.
In the first overtime period, Talia Klimes stepped up and made a huge save in the 95th minute to keep the score tied, and overtime would continue. Klimes and the High Point defense would shutout CSU in the first overtime period, causing the game to go the distance.
High Point had two quality chances in the second overtime, but Charleston Southern would stay strong and make the necessary stops to keep the game tied. In the 103rd minute Sam Gerhart took a shot that looked promising but Jazmin Gonzalez would make the save. The Panthers had one more chance to try win the game Ashlyn Kearney would shoot in the 108th minute but Gonzalez ended her great day with a save. This would ultimately result in the game ending in a draw. This was the Panthers first draw of the season.
