Panthers Face No. 20 UNC In Final Midweek of 2019

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Looking to bounce back from last weekend's series loss to Gardner-Webb, High Point University baseball will compete in its final midweek contest of the season, on the road at No. 20 North Carolina. 

The Panthers were riding a seven-game winning streak before their three games against the Bulldogs this past weekend, and will attempt to reignite their winning ways in the 17th contest of their Division I history with the Tar Heels this Tuesday. HPU is 1-2 against ACC opponents this year, after defeating Wake Forest on a 7-5 walk-off win two weeks ago, and come in to Chapel Hill sporting a 6-5 record during the midweek in 2019.

The preseason favorite to win the ACC this year, UNC began the 2019 campaign with a ranking of No. 7, before reaching a season-low of No. 20 in the most recent D1Baseball poll. The Tar Heels owned a 12-1 record before the start of conference play, but have since gone 24-14, with 11 of those losses coming in ACC play alone.

AT THE PLATE
• With his nine-game hitting streak coming to an end this Sunday, sophomore Travis Holt is now hitting a team best .328 on the year; he ranks first in the Big South with 1.41 knocks per game
• Joe Johnson's nine-game hitting streak came to an end this past Saturday, with his OBP of .367 now trailing only Daniel Millwee (.389) for a team best
• Before their series with Gardner-Webb, the Panthers were on a streak of seven straight double-digit hitting performances, out-hitting opponents 84-49 over their seven game winning streak
• Senior JJ Woodard touched first in all three games against Gardner-Webb this past week, drawing three walks in his first seven plate appearances and going 2-for-4 on Sunday
 
ON THE HILL
• With a 5.44 H/9 and 1.00 WHIP righty Grey Lyttle leads the Big South in both categories, while ranking 14th and 37th in the country respectively
• Senior lefty Matt Hodges has given up just two earned runs over his past five appearances, averaging an ERA of 1.93 during that span
• High Point's 4.76 ERA and .251 batting average against both sit second in the conference to Campbell University; Grey Lyttle and Harrison Smith's respective BAA's of .169 and .212 rank first and second in the Big South
• Freshman righty KJ Wells has surrendered a single earned run over his past four appearances (9.0 IP), striking out a career-high six batters in his four innings of work against Elon

SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
• Starting the season off 12-1 the Tar Heels ranked as high as No. 5 in the opening month of the season, but have since fallen down to a season-low of No. 20 in the latest D1Baseball poll
• Drawing 323 walks over 51 games in 2019, UNC currently sits second in the country in bases on balls; they have three individuals ranking in the top-25 of that category nationally 
• The Tar Heels' 59 home runs only rank seventh in the ACC this year, but as high as 27th in Division I baseball, the club is slugging .447 as a team in 2019

COMING UP NEXT
High Point remains on the road for its final test of the regular season, competing in a three-game series in Radford from Thursday through Saturday. The Panthers will be looking to improve on their No. 5 standing within the Big South, defeating RU in three of the pair's last four meetings.
