HIGH POINT, N.C.—The No. 25 High Point University women's lacrosse team opens the 2019 Big South Tournament Friday (April 26) against Campbell at Vert Stadium. The top-seeded Panthers take on the fourth-seeded Camels at 4 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
The winner will take on the winner of No. 2 Longwood and No. 3 Winthrop in the Big South final on Sunday (April 28) at 2 p.m.
The Panthers (13-4, 6-0 Big South) won their third-consecutive Big South Regular Season Championship and have won their 24 contests against Big South opponents, including postseason. HPU is looking for its third-consecutive Big South Tournament crown.
High Point is 12-2 all-time in the Big South Tournament and captured the championship in 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018.
Nine Panthers were honored by the Big South Conference, including redshirt-junior
Meredith Chapman, who was honored as the league's Defensive Player of the Year as well as Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and sophomore
Abby Hormes, who was selected as the Big South Offensive Player of the Year.
Chapman and Hormes were also named to the All-Big South First Team, along with senior
Samantha Herman, juniors
Ashley Britton and
Hayley Norris and sophomore
Sarah Zeto. Senior
Allie Little and sophomore
Rachel Foster were honored on the All-Big South Second Team, while senior Valerie was an honorable mention selection.
The nine Panthers and six first-team honorees ties the 2018 HPU squad for the most All-Big South selections in a single season. Chapman is the second Panther to win Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Jasmine Jordan in 2014. Hormes is the third Panther to win Offensive Player of the Year, joining
Samantha Brown (2017) and Mackenzie Carroll (2014). Chapman's Defensive Player of the Year honor is the fifth in program history, joining Jordan (2013, 2014),
Christina Del Sesto (2017) and
Erica Perrotta (2018).
Hormes leads the Panthers and the Big South in points (86) and assists (32) and leads HPU and is second in the conference with 55 goals. Her 86 points rank seventh in the nation and is one shy of the single-season HPU record. Hormes also leads the team with 72 draw controls. She has 113 career goals and is one away from fourth all-time at HPU and five away from third.
Chapman leads HPU and the Big South and is ninth in the nation in caused turnovers (2.41 per game). Her 42 caused turnovers is an HPU single-season record. Chapman also leads High Point with 41 ground balls and is second with 59 draw controls.
In goal, Zeto ranks first in the Big South and 24th in the nation with a 9.97 goals against average. She is also first in the conference and 36th in the country with a 46.8 save percentage.
The Panthers rank fourth in the nation in caused turnovers (12.76 per game), fifth in scoring margin (+8.12), fifth in scoring offense (16.65) and ninth in scoring defense (8.53). HPU is also seventh in shot percentage (.489).
ALL-TIME SERIES
This will be the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs, with High Point leading the series 10-0. The Panthers won the first matchup this year, 21-7, at Vert Stadium on April 10.
ON THE FIGHTING CAMELS
Campbell finished the regular season 6-10 overall and 3-3 in Big South Conference play. The Fighting Camels won two of their final three games, including the season finale at Radford, 11-6, on Saturday (April 20) to qualify for the Big South Tournament. Annie Pazulski leads the team in points with 52 and assists with 28. Melissa Placek is the leading goal scorer with 33 goals.
