HPU Going For Back-To-Back Big South Series Wins

March 28, 2019

HIGH POINT, N.C. - High Point University baseball will be in search of their second straight Big South series win this weekend, facing off with Charleston Southern at home in Williard Stadium. The Panthers have registered wins in three of their past four contests, beating opponents by nearly four runs per contest during that period of time.

While the Purple & White's series win over USC Upstate last week puts its Big South record at 2-4 on the year, the Bucs are yet to record a win in conference-play at 0-6. HPU is currently on a 13-game winning streak against Charleston Southern, and have not lost to CSU since May of 2011.

AT THE PLATE
• 11 Panthers reached first against NC Central this past Tuesday, as the side accrued eight knocks, six walks and four HBP
• Senior JJ Woodard has been on a tear since last weekend's series at Upstate, he's slashing .429/.471/.786 over his last four appearances
• After seeing his 10-game on base streak come to an end this Tuesday at NC Central, Ryan Russell now leads the Panthers in batting average (.277) and OBP (.402)
• With solo shots from Russell and Woodard, and a pair of jacks from Joe Johnson, the Panthers have delivered four home runs in their previous four games, after hitting eight in their first 18 contests of 2019

ON THE HILL
• Right-hander Harrison Smith earned Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week honors this Monday after tossing the first complete game of his career against USC Upstate. The junior held the Spartans to four hits and a single run in the Panthers' 3-1 Saturday victory
• Friday starter Grey Lyttle delivered a career performance of his own against the Spartans, surrendering a single earned run over a 5.2 inning start, while tallying a personal best seven strikeouts and 103 pitches thrown
• The Panther bullpen has surrendered just a single earned run over the past four games, averaging an ERA of 0.57 during that span
• Sophomore Jacob Winger grabbed the first save of his career against Upstate this past Friday, giving up a single run and three knocks to close out a 4-2 win over the Spartans. Winger currently holds an ERA of 1.42 and a WHIP of just .66

SCOUTING THE BUCS
• CSU's pitching staff currently ranks first in the Big South with a 2.24 K/BB ratio, while their 224 strikeouts are also tops in the conference
• The Buccaneer offense collected 22 hits and four home runs over their weekend against Radford, despite losing all three contests
• The Bucs have given up 176 runs on the year, third-most in the conference. Only 133 of those runs have been earned however, with CSU holding one of the worst fielding percentages in Division I (.953)

COMING UP NEXT
The Panthers have a scheduled rematch with UNCG in the coming midweek, matching up with the Spartans in Greensboro next Tuesday at 6 PM. HPU will be looking for some payback against their triad rival, dropping a 6-2 decision to UNCG at home earlier in the year.
