In-State Matchups Highlight Midweek Schedule

HIGH POINT, N.C. - After losing last weekend's series to inclement weather, High Point University baseball gets back to work with a pair of midweek games against NC Central and North Carolina A&T.

The Panthers will host Central on Tuesday following a week off after their home opener against UNCG. The Purple & White will be looking to bounce back from that 6-2 loss to the Spartans, after taking two of three at Old Dominion to open 2019. HPU gets back on the road on Wednesday, taking the short trip to Greensboro for a 4 PM first pitch at North Carolina A&T. The Panthers are currently on a six-game winning streak against the Bulldogs, last losing to the program back in 2014.

Both NC Central and A&T have had impressive starts to the season. The Eagles hold a 4-2 record with a series win against Canisius, while the Bulldogs' lone loss in 2019 came at the hands of the No. 5 team in the country, North Carolina.

AT THE PLATE
• Sam Zayicek was named Big South Freshman of the Week after the Panthers' opening season series, slashing .400/.538/.500 in the Panthers' three games at Old Dominion
• Third baseman Travis Holt has started the 2019 campaign on a four-game hitting streak, he's hit in his last five appearances in Purple & White, dating back to last year
• Catcher Daniel Millwee and designated hitter Joe Johnson have reached first safely in all four games to start the season, their individual OBP's of .444 trail only Zayicek for a team-lead
• Freshman Trent Harris leads the Panthers with five walks this season, of the five 1-0 counts he's faced this year, three of them have ended in a free base

ON THE HILL
• Sophomore righty Jacob Winger received Big South Reliever of the Week honors to start the year, staying perfect on the mound through the final 2.1 innings of HPU's finale at ODU
• Seven Panther pitchers currently hold a relief ERA of 0.00, with freshman Jack Nathan tossing 0.2 innings of shutout baseball in his collegiate debut against UNCG
• This Wednesday's starter Muhammed Eid went a full 7.0 against UNCG in his team's home opener loss, the righty held the Spartans scoreless from the third through the seventh, facing just four over the minimum during that span
• Surrendering less than three walks per nine innings, the Panther pitching staff leads the Big South with a 2.83 BB/9, the 26th-lowest in all of D1 baseball

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
• Forced to postpone the first two games of their series with Delaware State, the Eagles split a Sunday doubleheader against the Hornets, following a 2-1 series victory over Canisius the week prior
• Allowing less than six hits per game, Central's pitching staff currently has the 15th-largest K/9 in Division I at 11.7
• Four Eagles already have five-plus walks in 2019, holding a team OBP of .404 on the year

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
• NC A&T has started 2019 5-1, with its lone loss of the season coming in a 2-1 road contest at No. 5 North Carolina
• The Bulldogs' pitching staff has one of the best WHIP's in the country, averaging an eighth-ranked 0.92
• NC A&T starting pitchers have an ERA of 1.08 thus far in 2019, while AJ Hunt leads the side on offense, slashing .364/.440/.636 with 11 RBI and two home runs

COMING UP NEXT
The Panthers come back home after their trip to Greensboro, hoping to tally their first home weekend series of the year, after their originally scheduled contests against Saint Joseph's were rained out earlier this year. HPU will host CAA foe William & Mary starting with a 4 PM first pitch inside Williard this Friday.
