History vs. William & Mary: The Panthers and Tribe have met in two previous series during HPU's Div. I era (since 2000), each winning two of three on their home field. William & Mary took two of three at Plumeri Park in 2013 before High Point returned the favor with a series victory at Williard Stadium in 2014.
In both instances, the road team won the opener in extra innings before the home team responded with two wins.
The Opponent: William & Mary has lost four straight games, including a bizarre 4-3, 11-inning walk-off loss at No. 18 UVA in which the Tribe were held without a hit. W&M was swept in three one-run games at No. 12 Clemson to begin the year and dropped three in a row to Quinnipiac last weekend.
William & Mary was projected to finish tied for fifth in the CAA. Junior Zach Pearson leads the Tribe with a .313 average while senior Ryan Hall paces the squad with eight RBI.
• Friday: Sophomore
Drew Daczkowski starts in the opener for HPU looking for his second straight win. He held Dayton to a run on two hits with seven strikeouts last Friday. Daczkowski is t-6 in the Big South with 13 strikeouts in his first two starts.
Southpaw Bodie Sheehan has been strong out of the gate for the Tribe, holding a 1.93 ERA through 14 innings in two starts. He's lasted seven frames in each of the two games, striking out 12 and walking just one combined batter.
• Saturday: Senior
Jordan Sergent aims to bounce back from a truncated start last Saturday as he lasted just 1.1 frames against Dayton. The senior will be making the seventh start of his career and third of the season.
Jamie Sara gets the ball for W&M on Saturday in search of his first win of the year. He allowed seven runs (four earned) in 3.1 frames last Saturday against Quinnipiac in a loss.
• Sunday: Junior
Andrew Gottfried climbs the hill in the finale for HPU. Gottfried has pitched well in his two starts despite not collecting a victory. He has struck out seven in each of his two outings over just 9.1 innings.
Freshman Jacob Haney will make his third career start on Sunday. He's pitched four innings in each of his first two starts, giving up five runs on five hits last time out vs. Quinnipiac.
Last Time Out: HPU pitched well for the majority of the afternoon on Tuesday in Chapel Hill, but ultimately fell to No. 13 North Carolina, 10-0. The Panthers were done by five errors and two big innings as the Heels scored eight of their 10 runs with two outs.
Five different Panther hurlers tossed scoreless innings, heading by redshirt-sophomore
Harrison Smith, who struck out two in a 1-2-3 third. Senior
Blake Schunk extended his hitting streak to five in a row with a 1-for-4 performance.
Bouncing Back: High Point responded from getting swept in the first weekend of the season to sweeping Dayton at Williard Stadium last weekend. It was the first home non-conference sweep for HPU since 3/11-13 vs. Rider.
Comeback Kings: High Point rallied from an early deficit in each of its three wins last week against Dayton. The Panthers trailed 1-0 in the first inning on Friday, 4-0 in the third in game one Saturday and 3-0 in the fifth in Saturday's nightcap. Senior
Hunter Lee provided the go-ahead single in the last of the eighth in the series finale for HPU's first last at-bat victory of the campaign. The Panthers were 9-19 when allowing the first run last year.
RISP-y Business: HPU has had little problem putting runners on base this season, but has struggled at times getting them home. The Panthers have had more at-bats with runners on base (151) than with no one on (113), including 98 at-bats with runners in scoring position. However, HPU is hitting only .214 (21-for-98) in those situations and has stranded 80 runners in eight games, the most in the Big South.
Sit Down, Be Humble: Through eight games, HPU's pitching staff has held its opponents to a .216 batting average, the best in the Big South by five points (Campbell, .221). Panther pitchers have allowed the second-fewest amount of hits (54) and struck out 75 batters in eight games, the fourth-best rate in the conference. HPU posted 15 punchouts in game one against JMU on Feb. 18, the most for any Big South pitching staff in a single game this year. The Purple & White have also issued the second-fewest free passes in the conference (30).
Up Next: HPU returns home for a mid-week contest against Charlotte on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Panthers will then travel to Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Invitational to play a pair of games against Ohio State and the host Chanticleers from Friday, Mar. 9 - Sunday, Mar. 11.
