Â
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team hosts Liberty on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a tussle between the two teams tied atop the Big South standings.
Â
The Panthers (13-6) moved to 7-1 in conference play with a dramatic 75-74 victory at Charleston Southern on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Flames (12-8) matched High Point the following day by defeating Radford at home to improve to 7-1.
Â
Quick Hitters:
• Entering Tuesday's contest tied atop the Big South standings, the winner will reach the midway point of conference play alone in first place as the teams start the second half of the double round-robin league schedule on Saturday.
Â
• During her first season as the team's main point guard,
Camryn Brown leads the Big South with a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio. That 2.3 ratio is the 51st-best in the nation.
Â
• Including the flurry of victories to end the 2016-17 season, the Purple & White have won 17 of their last 19 regular season contests against Big South opponents.
Â
•
Emma Bockrath - the 2016-17 Big South Player of the Year - has scored in double figures 32 times in 46 career contests against Big South Conference foes. Those 32 games include nine 20-point outbursts.
Â
• The High Point defense is coming alive in conference play ranking first in the league in steals (12.1/game) and turnover margin (+8.25/game).
Â
•
Shea Morgan and Bockrath are two of the five players in the Big South who are averaging at least 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in league action.
Â
• Thanks in large part to the steady point guard play from Brown, HPU has won the turnover battle in 12 games this season going 10-2 in those contests, but just 3-4 when they lose in that category.
Â
• Since the beginning of conference action, the Panthers have knocked down 105-of-133 free throws (.789), which is the best percentage in the Big South.
Â
• Head coach
DeUnna Hendrix has 71 Big South wins, which make her the eighth winningest coach in league history. Meanwhile, her .683 winning percentage is the second-highest mark among coaches with 100 regular season league games.
Â
• The Panthers are 71-33 against conference foes under Hendrix. That's the second-best mark in the league during her tenure at High Point trailing only Liberty.
Â
• During Hendrix's six years roaming the HPU sideline, the team has gone 37-13 in home conference games.
Â
• The 7-1 start to Big South play is the best start through seven games since the 2011-12 team started out 9-0 during Hendrix's lone season as an assistant on the staff.
Â
The Hunt for Win No. 100
Head coach
DeUnna Hendrix sits at 99 career wins with all of them coming at HPU. Hendrix is already third in all-time wins and would join Tooey Loy as the only two 100-win coaches since the program moved to D-I competition.
Â
Race to 1,000 Career Points
Harris and Bockrath enter Tuesday's contest neck-and-neck in a race to 1,000 points. Bockrath took the lead and moved into the top-10 in HPU's Division I scoring list with 954 points while Harris is 12th with 946. The last time HPU had teammates reach 1,000 points in the same season was when Cheyenne Parker and Erin Reynolds reached that threshold during the 2012-13 campaign.
Â
Sharpshooters Finding Their Strokes
• The Panthers lead the Big South and rank 11th nationally drilling 39.1 percent of their three-point attempts this season. Incredibly, that's 3.4 percent higher than that season when the team's 35.7 percent mark broke the program's single-season record.
Â
• Harris and Brown are No. 2 and No. 4 in the Big South and rank among the top-100 nationally in three-point percentage. Harris is hitting 40.4 percent, which ranks 62nd nationally while Brown is sitting in 97th at 39.1 percent on the year.
Â
• Although Brown has struggled in Big South play hitting 29.5 percent, Bockrath's has caught fire hitting 48.3 percent.
Â
Reserves Needed
• High Point is 11-1 when the bench outscores its opponent's reserves and 2-5 when that margin is reversed.
Â
• HPU averages a 23.5-14.0 edge in its wins and a 25.1-16.4 deficit in losses. Harris has accounted for 66 of the 84 bench points in the team's six losses.
Â
All-Time Series with Liberty
The Flames are 38-14 against the Panthers and are the only Big South foe with a winning record against High Point. During Hendrix's tenure, HPU is tied with Presbyterian for the best regualr season record against Liberty as both teams have gone 5-8 over the past five-plus years.
Â
Scouting the Flames
Liberty has kicked it up a notch defensively since the start of conference play. The team is 7-1 behind the league's top defense allowing just 51.4 points while limiting opponents to 35.7 percent shooting. Offensively, Liberty is led by Keyen Green who is pacing the conference with 16.0 points per game in league play thanks to a .617 field goal percentage against Big South foes.
Â
What to Watch
Tuesday's game will be a clash of styles, but both teams enter the contest averaging to win Big South games by more than 11 points. Liberty does it with a stout defense (57.8) and efficient offense (.428). On the other hand, High Point leads the league in turnover margin (+8.53/game), scoring (70.2) and three-point shooting (.391).
Â
Next Up
