HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University women's soccer team ignites its 2017 campaign by traveling to Boone, N.C. to take on Appalachian State at 4 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers and Mountaineers are meeting for the third straight season, having split the last two matchups.

High Point Notes:
• High Point went 1-1-0 in exhibition play, dropping a 3-0 decision at NC State before rebounding with a 2-0 triumph at Coastal Carolina. Sophomore
Alex Denny and redshirt senior Bri-Jean Charles scored for the Panthers in the victory.
• Senior goalkeeper
Alex Hank was named the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. She enters the 2017 campaign having already set the school record for victories (28) and shutouts (20.8). She begins the season with the best career goals-against average in school history (0.81) by nearly half a goal.
• Hank is one of 15 seniors on the team, which accounts for nearly half of the 32-member roster. The senior class has won 37 games in three years and needs eight wins to become the all-time winningest class in HPU Div. I history.
• HPU brings back a Big South-high 24 letterwinners from a year ago, including eight starters, which is tied for the second-most in the conference.
• The Panthers return 2016 first team All-Big South selections

Paige Rombach were elected captains of the squad in their respective senior seasons.
• High Point is 2-0-1 in its last three season openers and is 2-2-4 overall under ninth-year head coach

Appalachian State Notes:
• The Mountaineers went 10-8-2 a year ago and advanced to the Sun Belt Quarterfinals after a 5-4-2 conference record. App has posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in program history.
• App State was selected fourth in the Sun Belt Preseason Poll, behind South Alabama, Coastal Carolina, and Little Rock.
• Redshirt junior Erin Settle is the team's top returning goal-scorer with seven in 2016, the seventh-most in the Sun Belt. She also totaled 18 points, tied for fourth-most in the conference.
• Senior Sam Steyl returns in net for the Mountaineers after posting an 8-8-2 record, a 1.88 goals-against average, and four shutouts.
Series Notes:
• High Point is 3-3-0 in seven all-time meetings with Appalachian State.
• The Panthers won 2-0 last season behind goals from
Bailey Beattie (78') and
Tyler Gordon (90') in the team's home opener.
