HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team returns home during the midweek for its second game against Davidson this season on Tuesday, March 21.
The Series: The Panthers beat are 8-3 against the Wildcats in the Div. I era (2000-present) following their road win at Davidson back on Feb. 21.
The Opponent: Davidson has won six of its past nine games and it enters the week with an 11-7 overall record. The Wildcats are coming off a series win over St. Bonaventure to start conference play over the weekend. Davidson features a potent offense that is hitting .280 and averaging close to seven runs per game. Brian Fortier leads the team with a .356 batting average, eight home runs and 21 RBI on the season. Cam Johnson sits just behind Fortier with a .354 batting average and is tied with him for the team lead in runs scored with 17. He also boasts an on-base percentage of .506 having walked a team-high 19 times this season.
Last Time vs. Davidson: High Point earned a dramatic 12-11 win in 10 innings at Davidson on Tuesday. Junior
Carson Jackson continued his hot start to the season, going 5-6 at the plate with a home run, a double and five RBI. High Point held a one-run lead in both the eighth and ninth innings but was unable to hold onto the advantage either time. In the 10th, junior
Spencer Brown came through with a bases-loaded single to put HPU in front in the top of the inning then sophomore
Matt Hodges got the final three outs in the bottom of the frame to earn the win. High Point hit three home runs in the win and now have nine home runs this season. In addition to Jackson's home run, juniors
Austen Zente and
Jordan Sergent each hit their second round-tripper of the season.
Last Weekend: High Point dropped two of three games at Liberty in the Panthers' first Big South series of the season. HPU fell in the first game by a score of 11-1 but bounced back with a 7-4 win in the second game before dropping the rubber game by a score of 14-2. Freshman
Drew Daczkowski earned the win on the mound on Saturday after allowing three runs, one earned, in five innings of work and improved to 2-1 on the season. Junior
Blake Schunk hit .333 (3-9) in the series with a double while senior
Josh Greene hit .250 (3-12) with two RBI and two runs scored.
Greene Reemerging: Senior
Josh Greene has started each of the past eight games and is hitting .303 (10-33) with a triple, three home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored in those games. He hit a home run three-straight games for the Panthers with two at Kennesaw State and another at home against Wake Forest.
Power Surge: High Point has shown much more pop at the plate this season with 19 home runs in 18 games, second in the Big South. The Panthers are on an early pace to hit 61 home runs which would surpass the program Div. I record of 56. Juniors

Josh Greene is just behind the trio with three.
Start'em Young: The High Point pitching staff has relied on youth this season as underclassmen have pitched 126 of 160 innings (78.8 percent) for the Panthers in 2017. All 18 of HPU's games have been started by underclassmen including five each by freshmen
Trevor Holloway and
Drew Daczkowski. All three of HPU weekend starters, sophomore
Andrew Gottfried, Holloway and Daczkowski, rank among the top 10 in the Big South in opponent batting average and both Gottfried and Daczkowski rank among the top 10 in the conference in ERA.
Loving the Long Ball: High Point hit five home runs in the series against Kennesaw State, including four in the series finale. Senior
Josh Greene and junior
Hunter Lee both had two home runs on the weekend. In the final game at KSU, High Point led off four-straight innings with solo home runs as Lee hit one in both the second and fourth, Greene hit one in the third and junior
Austen Zente had one in the fifth.
Carson Jackson Named National POW: Junior
Carson Jackson was named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week on Feb. 20 after helping to lead the Panthers to a weekend series win over NJIT. Jackson went 5-11 at the plate with three home runs, five RBI and five runs scored. He had two home runs in High Point's come-from-behind win on Sunday making him the 15th player in HPU's Div. I history to record a multi-HR game.
Panthers launch four HRs in series finale vs. NJIT: High Point hit four home runs in the come-from-behind win over NJIT on Sunday. It was the most home runs in a game by the Purple & White since 2010 and one shy of the Panthers' Div. I single-game record. Junior
Carson Jackson had two home runs and juniors
Jordan Sergent and
Austen Zente both had one. All six High Point runs in the game came by way of the long ball, including two on Zente's home run in the eighth inning that put HPU in front.
Up Next: High Point heads back on the road for the second-straight weekend as the Panthers head to Rock Hill, S.C., for a three-game Big South Conference series against Winthrop. It is the second-straight weekend on the road for HPU to start conference play. High Point is 19-32 in the Div. I era against the Eagles.
