DELAND, Fla. – The High Point University baseball team will try and lock up its second-straight series win to start the 2017 season when it takes on Stetson on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 3:30 p.m., in DeLand, Fla. The Panthers opened the series with a 4-3 win in 10 innings on Friday night.
Freshman right-hander
Trevor Holloway is slated to get the start on Saturday for the Panthers. Holloway lasted three innings in his first collegiate start and took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and six walks while striking out three. He will face off with sophomore Jack Perkins from Stetson. Perkins allowed just one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out six in 7-1/3 innings against Southern Illinois in his first start of the season.
High Point scored two runs in the 10th inning to earn its third-straight win and its second in a row in extra innings. With the score tied at 2-2 and runners at second and third, redshirt-senior
Tim Mansfield hit an RBI single and junior
Zack Gray followed with a sac fly to score two runs for HPU.
Stetson managed to score one run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th but junior
Rion Murrah got the Hatters' Matt Spooner to fly out to right to shut the door.
Murrah pitched four innings in relief and allowed just one unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out five to pick up the win, improving to 1-0 on the season.
Tyler Keller was charged with the loss after giving up two earned runs on two hits and a walk in one inning of work.
Both starting pitchers turned in exemplary efforts in the contest. Sophomore
Andrew Gottfried pitched six innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out four. Stetson's Brooke Wilson pitched eight innings without giving up a hit, allowing two runs, one earned on five walks while striking out 12.
Mansfield finished 1-2 with two walks and two RBI for the Panthers and junior
Austen Zente went 1-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
