HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team will try and clinch its season-opening series against NJIT on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m., when the two teams meet in Williard Stadium for the rubber game of their three-game series.
Freshman
Drew Daczkowski will take the mound on Sunday for the Panthers. Daczkowski comes to the Panthers from Potomac Falls High School in Sterling, Va. He is a 2016 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American and was a second-team All-Conference selection as a senior. He will face off with fellow freshman Tyler Stafflinger for NJIT. The right-hander graduated from Manalapan High School in New Jersey and posted a 2.10 ERA in his senior season.
The two teams split the season-opening doubleheader on Saturday with the Panthers taking the first game by a score of 11-0 and NJIT winning the second, 4-2.
High Point's offense exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings of the season-opener on the way to its 11-0 win over the Highlanders. Four different HPU players had multiple hits, including redshirt-senior
Tim Mansfield and junior
Carson Jackson who both went yard in the contest. Mansfield finished 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Jackson finished 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Austen Zente went 2-4 with two RBI while junior
Jordan Sergent was 2-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Sophomore
Andrew Gottfried threw five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two walks to start the season at 1-0. Junior
Austin Heinz pitched the final four innings and allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out three to earn the save.
The Purple & White could never get the offense going in the second game, falling by a score of 4-2. Zente accounted for both Panther runs in the loss, finishing 1-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Mansfield recorded his second-straight multi-hit game to start 2017, finishing 2-3 with an RBI.
Freshman
Trevor Holloway battled control problems in his first collegiate start and took the loss after allowing two earned runs on one hit and six walks in three innings of work. The freshman right-hander had three strikeouts in the contest.
