LEXINGTON, S.C. – The second-seeded High Point University baseball team will take on No. 6 Winthrop in an elimination game in the Big South Baseball Championship on Wednesday, May 25, at 9:30 a.m., in Lexington, S.C.
The Panthers dropped into the losers' bracket after falling to No. 7 Liberty by a score of 6-1 on Tuesday morning. Freshman
Andrew Gottfried took the loss despite allowing just two runs in seven innings.
Gottfried fell to 6-5 in his freshman season after giving up two earned runs on six hits and no walks in seven innings while striking out four. The right-hander allowed just one base runner in his final four innings of work.

Dominic Fazio and sophomore
Carson Jackson recorded the Panthers' only hits on the day with Fazio finishing 1-2 with two walks and a run scored and Jackson finishing 1-4.
Winthrop lost to No. 3 Longwood in the first round and enter Wednesday's contest at 28-26 on the season. The Eagles are led by a pair of All-Big South second-team selections in outfielder Anthony Paulsen and catcher Roger Gonzalez. Paulsen leads the team with a .361 batting average and 53 runs scored while Gonzalez is hitting .338 with a team-high 24 extra-base hits and 43 RBI.
High Point won the series against the Eagles this season, 2-1, at home. The Panthers won the first two games by scores of 7-2 and 4-2 before dropping the third game, 6-2. Junior
Chris Clare hit .467 (7-15) with two doubles and two runs scored and Fazio hit .455 (5-11) with two doubles and two RBI in the series.
HPU is just 1-1 against Winthrop in the Big South Tournament. The two teams last met in 2009 when the No. 6 ranked Panthers upset the second-ranked Eagles in the second round by a score of 7-4.
