HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team concludes the 2016 regular season with the rubber game in its three-game series against Liberty on Friday, May 20, at 12 p.m. The two teams split a doubleheader on Thursday.
High Point needs to win the game against the Flames and have Winthrop beat Gardner-Webb to clinch second place in the Big South and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big South Baseball Championship.
Junior Andrew Scrubb will try to pick up his eighth win of the season for High Point on Friday. Scrubb suffered a tough luck loss against the Camels, giving up just three runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts in six innings. He is now 7-5 on the season with a 5.07 ERA and 87 strikeouts, second in the Big South.
The Panthers took the first game of the doubleheader with an 11-8 win before dropping the nightcap by a score of 11-10.
Sophomore
Hunter Lee hit home runs in both games and finished the day 3-6 at the plate with three walks, seven RBI and five runs scored. Junior
Josh Greene went 4-10 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored while redshirt-sophomore
Zach Vandergrift went 3-9 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.
Senior
Tyler Britton got the win in the first game after pitching four innings out of the bullpen and improved to 6-1 on the season. Britton allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk and struck out five. Sophomore
Bailey McKee took the loss in the second game after giving up two unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning on a hit and a walk. He drops to 0-1 on the season with the loss.
Zander Clouse suffered the loss for the Flames in game one and dropped to 4-3. The right-hander reliever allowed three runs, one earned on two hits and a walk in his one inning of relief. Cody Gamble got the win for Liberty in the second game and improved to 1-1. Gamble allowed one earned run on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. Jordan Scott pitched the final two innings for LU and allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out three to pick up the save.
