Michael HennesseyHIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team will go for its second-straight midweek series sweep on Wednesday, March 9, when the team takes on La Salle in Williard Stadium at 4 p.m. The Panthers took the first game of the series with a 5-1 win on Tuesday.
High Point improved to 8-4 on the season with the win while the Explorers dropped to 1-10 in 2016.
Senior right-hander
Michael Hennessey will get the ball on the mound for HPU in his second start of the season. Hennessey is 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA in 10-2/3 innings pitched over three appearances. In his first start of the season, the right-hander four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk over a career-high seven innings. He also matched his career high with six strikeouts in the contest. La Salle will start freshman right-hander Mike Anthony. It will be the first collegiate start for Anthony who has allowed just one hit and three walks in 2-2/3 scoreless innings over three appearances this season.
High Point picked up a 5-1 win in the two teams' first meeting on Tuesday. Freshman
Cooper Jeffers earned his first win with the Panthers after giving up just one unearned run in 5-1/3 innings of work.
Jeffers allowed just six hits and two walks in his 5-1/3 innings while striking out four batters. He has now given up just one earned run in 11-1/3 innings on the mound in 2016.
Jordan Meyer took the loss for La Salle, falling to 0-1 in three appearances this season. Meyer pitched five innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and three walks with one strikeout.
Junior
Chris Clare and sophomore
Carson Jackson both went 2-4 with a run scored at the plate for HPU on Tuesday. Jackson had a double and two stolen bases while Clare had a stolen base of his own, his sixth of the season. All told, High Point stole five bases on the day and now has a Big South-best 29 through 12 games this season. Senior
Tim Mansfield finished 1-3 with a walk, a stolen base and his conference-best third triple of the season.
