Andrew GottfriedHIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team will go for its first weekend sweep of the season when the team takes on Dayton in the third and final game on Sunday, at 1 p.m., in Williard Stadium. The Panthers clinched the series win with a 3-0 victory over Dayton on Saturday.
Freshman
Andrew Gottfried will make his first collegiate start for HPU on the mound on Sunday. Gottfried has appeared in two games so far this season and is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA. He earned his first win with five innings of relief work last Sunday, giving up just one unearned run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Senior right-hander Sam Brunner will start for Dayton. Brunner is 0-2 with a 12.86 ERA in two starts. He has pitched seven innings and allowed 14 hits and seven walks.
High Point has won six-straight games heading into Sunday, including a 3-0 win over the Flyers on Saturday. Junior
Andre Scrubb had his best outing of the season with eight scoreless innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. He allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out a season-high eight.
Zach Beaver was the hard-luck loser for the Flyers as the right-hander gave up just one earned run on five hits and a walk and struck out seven in seven innings.
HPU last won six-straight games in 2014 when the Panthers won two-straight against William & Mary, earned midweek wins over North Carolina Central and UNCG and won the first two games at the Elon Invitational against Gardner-Webb and Elon. Dayton falls to 0-8 with the loss.
Junior
Chris Clare scored two of High Point's three runs and extended his hit streak to 21 games stretching back to last season. He finished 1-2 with a walk and a stolen base and is just the fourth HPU player in the Div. I era (2000-present) to have a hitting streak reach 20 games. Senior
Dominic Fazio reached on walks twice and had an RBI and a run scored while senior
Tim Mansfield went 1-4 with two RBI thanks to an eighth-inning triple.
