Andrew GottfriedHIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team will go for its third-straight weekend sweep on Saturday, March 26, at 3 p.m., against Winthrop at Williard Stadium. The Panthers clinched the series over the Eagles with a 4-2 win on Friday.
Freshman
Andrew Gottfried will start his fourth game of the season on the mound for HPU on Saturday. The freshman is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 22 innings of work. Gottfried struck out five in four innings of work at UNC Asheville. He will face off against freshman left-hander Thad Harris for Winthrop. Harris is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA in eight appearances and four starts. He has given up 33 hits and five walks and struck out 24 in 30-1/3 innings of work.
High Point earned its sixth-straight win and its 17th win in 19 games on Friday with a 4-2 victory over Winthrop. Junior
Andre Scrubb struck out 10 in seven innings to earn his fifth win of the season.
Scrubb has won five-straight starts and is now 5-1 on the season. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out 10. Redshirt-senior
Joe Goodman pitched the final two innings and struck out three to earn his team-best third save of the season.
Zach Sightler took the loss on the mound for Winthrop, dropping to 3-1 in 2016. Sightler gave up three runs, two earned, on nine hits and two walks in 6-1/3 innings of work.
Junior
Drew Fopeano and sophomore
Spencer Brown combined to 4-6 with two RBI at the bottom of the High Point order as both finished 2-3. Brown hit his first collegiate home run with a solo shot in the eighth inning. Senior
Dominic Fazio and junior
Chris Clare joined Fopeano and Brown with multiple hits as Fazio went 2-4 with two doubles and Clare finished 2-5 with a double.
