Andrew GottfriedHIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University baseball team will take on Rider in double header action on Saturday, March 12, at Williard Stadium starting at 2 p.m. The Panthers took the first game of the three-game set with a 6-4 win on Friday.
The first game of Saturday's double header will be the first of four "Home Runs with our Heroes" games for High Point. The Panthers will welcome active military personnel from Camp LeJeune who will hit batting practice with the team and throw out ceremonial first pitches.
Junior
Andre Scrubb will pitch the first game for High Point and freshman
Andrew Gottfried will get the start in the second game. Scrubb pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out eight against Dayton last weekend. In his last two starts, the right-hander has surrendered just two earned runs in 13 innings on nine hits and six walks while striking out 15. He is 2-1 with a 4.76 ERA on the season. Gottfried pitched five innings and allowed three runs, one earned, in his first start last week. He is 1-1 on the season with a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings of work.
Right-handers Vincenzo Aiello and CJ Hirschy are set to start on the mound for Rider. Aiello has made two starts and currently sports a 0-2 record with a 13.50 ERA in 6-2/3 innings. Hirschy is 0-1 in his two starts with a 5.59 ERA in 9-2/3 innings.
High Point scored five runs in the seventh inning on Friday to pick up a 6-4 win over Rider. Sophomore
Austen Zente delivered the big hit in the frame with a bases-loaded double that drove in three for HPU.
Senior
Tyler Britton improved to 3-0 on the mound this season after allowing two unearned runs on four hits over 3-2/3 innings of relief with five strikeouts. Redshirt-senior
Scot Hoffman got the start and pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four.
Nick Margevicius took the loss for Rider, dropping to 0-3 in 2016. The left-hander gave up four earned runs on eight hits and two walks in 6-2/3 innings of work and struck out six HPU batters.
Zente finished 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. He has recorded hit in each of his past six games and is now hitting .385 for the season. Junior
Chris Clare also finished 3-4 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.
The win was the third in a row for High Point and it improves the Panthers record to 10-4 on the season. Rider falls to 0-9 with the loss.
