HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team hosts Wright State in the first of two midweek series this season beginning on Tuesday, March 1, at 4 p.m. The series will be the first time that the Panthers and Raiders have met on the baseball diamond.

The Opponent: Wright State enters the midweek series with a 5-2 record after dropping two of three games against No. 8 NC State over the weekend. The Raiders took the first game before losing the next two. Wright State has been very productive at the plate, averaging over eight runs per game. JD Orr is hitting .389 to lead the team while John Brodner, Sean Murphy and Gabe Snyder have all driven in 10 runs through seven games. Murphy also leads the team with 10 runs scored. Last season, Wright State went 43-17, won the Horizon League and reached the NCAA Regionals where the team was eliminated by #5-seeded Illinois. The Raiders received six of seven first-place votes and were picked to repeat in this year's Horizon League Preseason Poll.

Probable Starting Pitcher:
•Tuesday: Freshman Cooper Jeffers will make his collegiate debut for the Panthers on Tuesday. The left-hander comes to HPU from Boone High School in Orlando, Fla. Jeffers went 6-3 with a 2.02 ERA as a senior at Boone and was a Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention.

HPU vs. the Horizon: The Panthers' midweek series against Wright State will be the first games that High Point has ever played against a team currently in the Horizon League.

Last Weekend: High Point earned its first weekend series win of the season, taking two of three games against Marist. The Panthers lost the first game by a score of 8-6 but bounced back with a 4-2 win on Saturday and a 9-7 win on Sunday to take the series. Sophomore Hunter Lee excelled in the leadoff position, going 6-9 in the series with six walks, two doubles and a team-high four runs scored. Fellow sophomore Carson Jackson hit .500 (5-10) in the three games with three RBI and four runs scored while senior Dominic Fazio hit .417 (5-12) with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Saturday starter Andre Scrubb earned his first win of the season after giving up two earned runs in five innings on five hits and three walks while striking out seven. Freshman Andrew Gottfried earned the win in relief on Sunday, his first collegiate victory. Gottfried pitched five innings and allowed just one unearned run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Lee Setting The Table: Hunter Lee has been the quintessential leadoff man for the Panthers this season. He is hitting .476 (10-21) with eight walks, five doubles and six runs scored. Lee ranks first in the Big South and 10th in the nation in doubles. He is also first in the conference in walks, second in on-base percentage and fifth in batting average. Against Marist, the sophomore went 6-9 at the plate with six walks, two doubles and four runs scored.

Fazio Making The Most Of His Opportunity: Senior Dominic Fazio has grabbed the designated hitter position and made it his own in his final year with the Panthers. After serving as a bench player for most of his first three years at HPU, Fazio has started all six games and is hitting a team-best .500 (11-22) with four doubles, five RBI and six runs scored. He is ranked in the top-10 in the Big South in batting average, hits, doubles, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Clare and Parker Running Wild: Juniors Chris Clare and Luke Parker have been creating havoc on the base paths this season and are tied for first in the Big South with four stolen bases each. Clare is 4-5 in stolen base attempts while Parker is 4-4. Parker did most of his damage in series finale against Marist where he swiped three bags, the most in a game by any player in the Big South this season.

HPU Receives Free Passes Against UNCG: The Panthers were walked 13 times in the series finale against UNCG, matching the HPU Div. I single-game record set against Charleston Southern in 2007. The team also had three batters hit in the game. In the sixth inning, High Point scored six runs on just two hits as four players were walked and another two batters were hit.

Lee Ties HPU Doubles Record: Sophomore Hunter Lee began the 2016 season with three doubles on opening day against UNCG. The sophomore hit doubles to right in the first, third and sixth innings while also drawing a walk in the fourth. Lee's three doubles tied a HPU Div. I single-game record that has been achieved five other times, last by former Panther first baseman Spencer Angelis in 2012.

Greene Tabbed as Big South Preseason Player Of The Year: After a spectacular sophomore campaign, outfielder Josh Greene was named the 2016 Big South Preseason Player of the Year. Greene received four first-place votes and 19 points to finish just ahead of Campbell's Cole Hallum. The junior outfielder is the first HPU player to be named Preseason Player of the Year. Greene is a two-time All-Big South honoree and last season he led the Panthers with a .355 batting average, 37 RBI, seven home runs, 13 steals, a .441 on-base percentage and a .532 slugging percentage. In 24 conference games in 2015, he finished in the league's Top 10 for batting (.395), runs (17) and RBI (23).

Goodman Named to Stopper of the Year Watch List: Redshirt-senior pitcher Joe Goodman has been named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List for the third time. Last season, Goodman returned from Tommy John and went 0-2 with a team-high six saves for the Panthers. The right-hander made 20 appearances for HPU and finished with a 1.86 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 19-1/3 innings pitched. Goodman allowed posted a whip under 1.00, allowing just 11 hits and eight walks in his 19-1/3 innings of work. He is one of 70 players named to the watch list and one of only four from the Big South. Goodman is the first HPU player to be named to the Stopper of the Year watch list.

The New Guys: High Point welcomes 13 newcomers to the squad this season. HPU has nine freshmen and three junior college transfers. Juniors Luke Parker and Nick Capra and freshmen Conner Dunbar, JJ Woodard, Nick Blomgren and Nick Niarchos are expected to contribute in the field. Freshmen Andrew Gottfried and Cooper Jeffers will compete for time on the mound for the Panthers.

Up Next: High Point plays host to Dayton for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 4. HPU is 10-11 all-time against Dayton. The two teams last met in 2012 when the Panthers took two of three games at Williard Stadium.
