High Point vs. Marist:Â The High Point University baseball team continues its current home stand this weekend with a three-game series against Marist beginning on Friday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. The series will mark the first-ever meeting between High Point and Marist.

The Opponent: Marist began the 2016 season by going 1-2 at the Davidson Baseball Tournament last weekend in Davidson, N.C. The Red Foxes dropped the first two games of the weekend with a 4-3 loss to host Davidson on Friday and an 8-4 loss to Air Force on Saturday before bouncing back with a 8-3 win over Buffalo on Sunday. Freshman Jack Shirk went 5-11 with a double, a home run and six RBI to lead Marist on the weekend. Junior Tyler Kapuscinski recorded three hits, five walks, three RBI and a team-high four runs scored in the three games. Last season, Marist went 19-27-1 overall and 12-12 in the MAAC. Sophomore Sean Keenan will start on Friday for the Foxes followed by sophomore Charlie Jerla on Saturday. Keenan pitched five innings and allows just one run on two hits and four walks in his first start of the season. Jerla gave up four earned runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings of work in his first start.
Probable Starting Pitchers:•Friday: Redshirt-senior
Scot Hoffman will get the start on the mound for the Panthers on Friday. The right-hander was roughed up in his first start of the season, surrendering six earned runs on six hits and four walks in 2-2/3 innings of work. Hoffman went 2-4 with a 5.96 ERA in 14 appearances last season, his first with the Panthers.

•Saturday: Junior
Andre Scrubb makes his second start of 2016 on Saturday. He lasted just four innings in his first start and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three. Last season, Scrubb went 6-1 with a 2.50 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 54 innings of work.

HPU vs. the MAAC: High Point is 4-0 against schools currently in the MAAC during the HPU Div. I era. The Panthers are 3-0 against Manhattan after sweeping a weekend series against the Jaspers in 2012 and 1-0 against Niagara. HPU will play six games against MAAC opponents this season starting with this weekend's series against Marist.

Last Weekend: High Point dropped its season-opening series against UNCG, losing the first two games by scored of 9-3 and 13-5 before bouncing back with a 15-5 win in the finale on Sunday. The Panthers fell behind early in each of the first two games, trailing 6-0 after three innings at Williard on Friday and 12-1 after six innings at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Saturday. HPU bounced back on Sunday, avoiding a sweep with a 10-run win at Williard Stadium. Senior
Tyler Britton earned the win in relief on Sunday after giving up just two runs, one earned in four innings of work while striking out four. Senior

HPU Receives Free Passes Against UNCG: The Panthers were walked 13 times in the series finale against UNCG, matching the HPU Div. I single-game record set against Charleston Southern in 2007. The team also had three batters hit in the game. In the sixth inning, High Point scored six runs on just two hits as four players were walked and another two batters were hit.

Fazio Making The Most Of His Opportunity: Senior
Dominic Fazio has grabbed the designated hitter position and made it his in his final year with the Panthers. After serving as a bench player for most of his first three years at HPU, Fazio started all three games against UNCG at designated hitter and hit .600 with two doubles, one RBI and a team-high four runs scored. He also was hit by a pitch and drew a walk in the three games.

Lee Opens Season In Style: Sophomore
Hunter Lee began the 2016 season with three doubles on opening day against UNCG. The sophomore hit doubles to right in the first, third and sixth innings while also drawing a walk in the fourth. Lee's three doubles tied a HPU Div. I single-game record that has been achieved five other times, last by former Panther first baseman
Spencer Angelis in 2012.
Greene Tabbed as Big South Preseason Player Of The Year: After a spectacular sophomore campaign, outfielder
Josh Greene was named the 2016 Big South Preseason Player of the Year. Greene received four first-place votes and 19 points to finish just ahead of Campbell's Cole Hallum. The junior outfielder is the first HPU player to be named Preseason Player of the Year. Greene is a two-time All-Big South honoree and last season he led the Panthers with a .355 batting average, 37 RBI, seven home runs, 13 steals, a .441 on-base percentage and a .532 slugging percentage. In 24 conference games in 2015, he finished in the league's Top 10 for batting (.395), runs (17) and RBI (23).

Goodman Named to Stopper of the Year Watch List: Redshirt-senior pitcher
Joe Goodman has been named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List for the third time. Last season, Goodman returned from Tommy John and went 0-2 with a team-high six saves for the Panthers. The right-hander made 20 appearances for HPU and finished with a 1.86 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 19-1/3 innings pitched. Goodman allowed posted a whip under 1.00, allowing just 11 hits and eight walks in his 19-1/3 innings of work. He is one of 70 players named to the watch list and one of only four from the Big South. Goodman is the first HPU player to be named to the Stopper of the Year watch list.

The New Guys: High Point welcomes 13 newcomers to the squad this season. HPU has nine freshmen and three junior college transfers. Juniors

Last Season: High Point posted its second-straight winning season and the third winning season since joining Div. I with a record of 29-26 in 2015. The Panthers claimed series wins over LIU Brooklyn, the College of Charleston, Campbell, Longwood, Winthrop, Presbyterian College, UNC Asheville and Liberty. The series win over the Flames in Lynchburg was HPU's first road series win over Liberty since 2006. High Point advanced to the Big South Semifinals for the second-straight year and the third time in four seasons. The Panthers finished the season with a team era of 3.65, making it the third-straight season that HPU posted a team ERA under four, a feat that the program had not accomplished in the Div. I era prior to 2013.

Jackson and Lee Make Impact In First Season: High Point featured an experienced roster in 2015, but that did not stop two freshmen from making themselves part of HPU's everyday lineup.
Carson Jackson and
Hunter Lee have both started at least 41 games for HPU. Jackson arrived in a big way for High Point during the opening weekend of the season, going 5-8 with three RBI and two runs scored against UNCG. He led all Big South freshmen with a .311 batting average and 13 doubles and was tops on the team with 40 runs scored. Lee entered the lineup during HPU's three games in Aiken, S.C., and hit .230 while providing excellent defense at the hot corner. He had 12 doubles, one home run, 20 RBI and 32 runs scored. His 17-game hit streak was also the longest of any HPU player in 2015.

Greene and Angelis Named All-Conference: Josh Greene and
Spencer Angelis earned 2015 All-Big South honors with Greene named to the first team and Angelis named to the second team. Greene led HPU with a .355 batting average, seven home runs, 37 RBI and 13 steals. He ranked fifth in the Big South in batting average, fourth in on-base percentage and sixth in slugging percentage. He was one of two players in the conference to rank in the top 10 in all three categories along with Radford infielder Josh Gardiner. Angelis hit .335 with 13 doubles, three home runs, 23 RBI and 28 runs scored. Angelis was third in the Big South with a .418 batting average in conference play as well as third in the conference with a .471 on-base percentage and fourth in the conference with a .608 slugging percentage.

Up Next: High Point hosts Wright State in the first of two midweek series this season. The Panthers and Raider will meet at Williard Stadium for two games starting on Tuesday, March 1. Last season, Wright State went 43-17, won the Horizon League and reached the NCAA Regionals where the team was eliminated by #5-seeded Illinois. The Raiders received six of seven first-place votes and were picked to repeat in this year's Horizon League Preseason Poll.
