HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team will try and level its home-and-home weekend series with UNCG on Saturday, Feb. 20, when the teams meet at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. at 2 p.m.
Junior
Andre Scrubb will take the ball on Saturday for High Point. Scrubb appeared in 19 games with three starts in 2015 for the Panthers, posting a 6-1 record with one save and a 2.50 ERA. He struck out 48 and walked 19 in 54 innings of work while holding opposing hitters to a .188 batting average. In his three starts, Scrubb went 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21-1/3 innings. He picked up a complete-game victory over Liberty in the Big South Tournament, striking out 10. Flames in the win.
The Panthers dropped the first game of the series by a score of 9-3 on Friday in Williard Stadium. The Spartans scored six runs with two outs in the third inning to sink HPU.
Redshirt-senior
Scot Hoffman started on the mound for High Point and took the loss after going 2-2/3 innings and allowing six earned runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
UNCG reliever Andrew Wentz got the win for the Navy and Gold after pitching 4-1/3 innings of relief and allowing just one earned run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Hunter Smith started for UNCG and pitched 4-2/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Sophomore
Hunter Lee posted his second-career three-hit game with three doubles to go along with a walk and a run scored in the season opener. Senior
Dominic Fazio was the only other HPU hitter to record multiple hits, also going 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Friday's loss drops HPU's record on opening days to just 5-12 since joining Div. I in 2000. The Panthers are now 4-3 in season openers at Williard Stadium.
