MEET SCHEDULE | PERFORMANCE LIST
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University women's track & field team will open the 2014-15 indoor season at the JDL College Kickoff Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday.
Â
The team will begin the year looking to build off of last year's fifth-place finish at the Big South Indoor Championship.
"Our athletes have been working hard and have had an incredible fall," associate head coach
Eric Dudley said. "I really like the direction we're heading - some people have taken some risks to make some good, fundamental changes. it's really exciting for the athletes to finally have the opportunity to put some marks on the board and see where they stand. That's the biggest reason why we participate in this meet - it allows us to culminate the work of the semester into a meet before the holidays. Once we get back from break, we're full swing in season."
High Point will have 19 athletes competing in 10 events over the course of the day on Saturday. The day begins with field events starting around 9:30 a.m. Junior
Jamie Schnuck kicks off the meet by participating in the shot put and weight throw. She set a career-best mark of 11.36 meters (37-3.25) at last year's Big South Championship. Juniors
Jill Marois and
Alyssa Palenchar, fresh off a second and third place finish, respectively, at last year's indoor championship, will compete in the pole vault along with redshirt-sophomore
Katie Benavente, sophomore
Madison Depner and seniors
Catelyn Griffin and
Ashton Kirby.
Â
The day continues with eight participants competing in jumps. Junior
Erica Herrmann will participate in the high jump, coming off a 10
th-place finish at the Big South Championship last season with a mark of 1.57 meters (5-1.75). She'll be joined by sophomore
Erika Bridges, who had a career-best jump of 1.52 meters (4-11.75) at the Big South Championship, and juniors
Sara Katherine Kirkpatrick and
Zoey Miller.
Â
Bridges will also compete in the long jump with sophomores
Alyn Carr and
Amanda Gregory along with freshman
Kela Seals, who will be making her debut for HPU. Sophomore
Alexis Fernandez will compete in the long jump and triple jump after posting a career-best 5.30 meters (17-4.75) in long jump at the Big South Championship.
Â
The Panthers will have a host of participants in the running events, primarily the 60m hurdles. Bridges, Kirkpatrick and Miller will participate in addition to their field events while freshmen
Mikaela Campbell,
Haley Cianfarini,
Ashlynn Schiro and
CeAnna Soper will make their debuts in the event.
Â
Campbell and Gregory will compete in the 60m dash while HPU will have Cianfarini, Miller, Schiro and Soper participating in the 300m. Kirkpatrick rounds out the event for High Point with her participation in the 400m.
"We're looking forward to seeing some school records broken based on the work people have done this fall," Dudley said. Jamie and Alyssa have a chance to take it to another level this season. On the other side of things, it will be great to see our freshmen hurdlers go out there and finally put some times on the track. They've grown a lot athletically this fall and now we want to see them to grow as competitors as well."
