The High Point University men's soccer team posted a 4-2 win over VMI in the team's regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. Sophomore
Ben Burdon played a role in two HPU goals with a goal and an assist.
"I am excited to win a Big South conference game on the road," head coach
Dustin Fonder. "Conference road games are always a challenge and today was no different. I am glad that the team was able to dig in and get a result. We are excited with our end-of-season form and we will look to continue it in the Big South tournament."
The home side took an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Blake McCauley scored on a rebound to put the Keydets ahead. McCauley beat the Panthers to a rebound off a shot by Chase Barnett and slipped a shot past HPU keeper
Kody Palmer for the goal.
High Point responded just one minute later, tying the score on redshirt-freshman
Pat Shelton's sixth goal of the season. Junior
Mamadee Nyepon slipped Shelton in past the defense. Shelton beat the VMI keeper with a shot from a wide angle into the side panel to knot the game at 1-1.
HPU scored again in the 29th minute when freshman
Renato Punyed found the back of the net to put the Panthers up by a goal. Burdon got to the end line and slotted it back to Punyed in the box. The freshman settled the pass and calmly finished with a shot past the keeper, making the score 2-1.
Junior Colson Wiley continued to extend the High Point lead in the 36th minute, scoring his first goal of the season to put HPU ahead, 3-1. Freshman
Chris Ramsell received a throw in on the run from fellow freshman
Matt Gweh and passed across to Wiley in the box. The junior slammed it into the net from six-yards out for the Panthers' third goal of the half.
VMI struck again early in the second half with a goal by Travis Borkey, making the score 3-2. After a poor corner kick by the Keydets, Alex Hartman controlled a clearance and delivered a cross back into the box. Borkey jumped and headed the ball in to pull VMI back with one.
High Point scored its fourth goal of the game in the 76th minute when Burdon scored his second goal in as many games to push the HPU lead to 4-2. Burdon picked up a loose ball in the midfield and dribbled past two VMI defenders before unleashing a shot from 20-yards which hit off the post and into the goal.
HPU ended the game with a 14-7 edge in shots, putting nine of its 14 shots on frame. Four different High Point players tied for the team lead with two shots including Wiley who put both his shots on target.
Palmer earned his seventh win of the season in goal for High Point, making one save in the contest. Daniel Kitchen made five saves in the loss for VMI.
