Kelly Altman named to the HPU men's soccer coaching staff

Head men's soccer coach Dustin Fonder announced the addition of Kelly Altman to the men's soccer coaching staff as an assistant coach on Tuesday. Altman comes to HPU after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Trinity University.

“We are thrilled to have Kelly Altman join our staff here at High Point University,” Fonder said. “We feel his proven track record of success will be an asset to our program. He brings a fresh set of eyes and a new set of ideas that should help us continue to move forward.”

In five years on the bench with Trinity, Altman helped lead the Tigers to a record of 77-7-4, four SCAC Championships and an appearance in the NCAA Div. III Final Four. Trinity was also consistently competitive against NCAA Div. I opponents, posting an 8-4-0 record in 12 games. Under Altman's coaching, the Tiger defense allowed only 72 goals in 106 games for a goals-against average of just 0.68.

“I am very excited to join the High Point coaching staff,” Altman said. “I spent the last 11 years of my life at Trinity University in San Antonio so it was going to have to be something special to take me away from there. Coach Fonder's ambition and vision matches that of my own and I feel that I have definitely found that special place worth leaving Trinity for here at High Point University.”

Along with his work as an assistant coach at Trinity, Coach Altman served as the head boys varsity soccer coach at San Antonio's Central Catholic High School where he led the Buttons to an overall record of 62-9-3, three district titles, three-straight top-10 finishes in the San Antonio Express-News' area rankings, including the No. 1 spot in 2008, and two Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state titles in his three seasons. For his efforts, Coach Altman was named TAPPS 5A Coach-of-the-Year across all sports.

Altman played as a defender for Trinity from 2001 to 2004 and was integral in the Tigers' NCAA National Championship season in 2003. A team captain in 2004, Coach Altman contributed to the success of a squad which amassed an overall record of 79-5-2 and set an All-Division's record with 43 consecutive wins.

With his collegiate soccer career complete, Coach Altman used his final year of athletic eligibility in 2005, as a kicker on the Trinity football team. An All-SCAC and All-South Region honoree, he was named the SCAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Year.

Altman holds the Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Altman now resides in Greensboro with his wife, Ashley.
