The High Point University men's basketball team held an eight-point lead at halftime and held off a Coastal Carolina surge in the second half en route to a 70-65 win on Thursday night at Kimbel Arena in Conway, S.C. HPU senior Shay Shine scored 22 points to lead four Panthers in double-figures.

"It was a team effort tonight, we got good scoring from Shay, Nick, Devante and Corey and we played well defensively," said HPU head coach Scott Cherry. "Corey gave us 11 [points] and 11 [rebounds] and we need him to play like that every night. Devante is showing confidence and producing for us. Our kids are resilient and battled like they have all year long. They came out and played really well tonight. Now we just have to go down to Charleston Southern and try to do the same thing Saturday night."

Shine added six rebounds and four assists to his 22 points and hit four three-pointers in the win. Freshman guard Devante Wallace made his second-straight start and scored 16 points with seven rebounds, going 4-for-7 from three-point range. Senior Nick Barbour scored 14 points and redshirt-junior forward Corey Law notched his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Coastal Carolina got 18 points from point guard Kierre Greenwood, 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds from Chris Gradnigo and 12 points and six rebounds from Sam McLaurin.

High Point improved to 10-15 overall and 6-9 in the Big South while Coastal Carolina fell to 17-7 overall and 10-4 in the league. It marked the first time since 2008-09 that HPU won back-to-back road Big South games and was the first time HPU beat Coastal Carolina on the road since Jan. 22, 2007. HPU has won three of its last four games.

High Point held a 33-25 lead at halftime and held it for the first seven minutes of the second period, getting its largest lead of 11 points (53-42) when Shine hit a three-pointer coming out of a timeout with 14:04 remaining.

Coastal Carolina then scored the next 10 points to get within one, its best challenge of the game. The Chanticleers' run started when Greenwood hit a three-pointer, then drove to the basket for a layup. Jon Pack finished off a three-point play and, on HPU's next possession, Coastal forced a shot-clock violation and McLaurin hit a laypup to bring the crowd to its feet.

It was five-straight baskets for the Chanticleers before Barbour got past CCU guard Anthony Raffa and hit a layup plus one to get HPU back ahead by four (56-52) and quiet the crowd. A pair of free throws by Law and a three-pointer by Barbour put HPU back up by nine (61-52) and the Panthers kept their lead to four or more points the rest of the way.

With just over a minute to go, Gradnigo hit a layup that made it 66-62. He drew a foul but wasn't able to hit the free throw. Shine was fouled hard on the inbounds pass and hit both free throws to make it a six-point gap. After Coastal missed two shots, Justin Cheek got the ball on a fast break. His layup missed, but Barbour tipped it in to put the game away. Greenwood hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the final 70-65.

The teams nearly went shot-for-shot in the early going and it was tied 13-13 before a layup by Law with 12:45 left in the first half. The next basket was a three-pointer by Cheek and the Panthers led the rest of the way.

Wallace's 16 points came on the heels of his 13 against Gardner-Webb last Saturday. High Point committed just seven turnovers in the game and outrebounded Coastal Carolina, 37-36. The Panthers shot 50 percent (11-for-22) from three-point range.

The Panthers continue their road trip on Saturday with at game at Charleston Southern at 5:30 p.m. High Point won the teams' first meeting of the season, 88-78, on Jan. 2 at the Millis Center.
