The High Point University baseball team fell to Virginia Tech by a score of 10-6 on Tuesday at Williard Stadium. The Hokies put up five runs in the eighth to secure the win over HPU. Freshman
Ryne Rush was 2-3 with two RBI in the game.
Virginia Tech's big inning came against reliever
John Maloney who allowed four runs on two hits in the top half of the eighth.
Harrison Phillips relived Maloney, allowing one run of his own, before getting out of the inning.
The Panthers got a solid start from junior
Ryan Retz who allowed two runs through his first six innings before Virginia Tech put up three runs in the seventh. All three runs in the seventh were unearned as a ball off the bat of Hokies' designated hitter Sean Keselica slipped under the glove of HPU first baseman
Sal Pezzino.
Retz took the loss for High Point, allowing five runs, two earned, in a career-long outing of seven innings. He walked three and matched his career high with four strikeouts. Retz is now 1-1 on the season.
Eddie Campbell picked up the win for Virginia Tech, pitching 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He had two strikeouts and one walk for his first win of the season. The Hokies improve to 7-2 this season while High Point stands at 6-3.
High Point put up four runs in the bottom of the eighth but couldn't overcome an eight-run deficit. Virginia Tech reliever Ricky Hodges hit
Devin Bujnovsky, gave up a single to Retz and walked
Mike Miedzianowski to load the bases with no outs. Rush singled to left center to drive in two and cut Virginia Tech's lead to 10-4.
Andrew Bartlett and
Scott Glover both picked up RBIs with groundouts to second base to make the final score 10-6.
Rush also had an RBI single in the second inning to finish the game 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior
Zach Hubbard went 2-4 with one RBI. Miedzianowski walked twice, coming around to score both times.
High Point returns to Williard Stadium on Wednesday against Elon. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
