The bullpen put up 4-1/3 scoreless innings to lead the High Point University baseball team to a 4-3 win over Dayton in the rubber match of the weekend series. The Panthers improve to 6-2 with the series win over the Flyers.

Freshman Joe Goodman pitched 2-1/3 scoreless innings of relief for his first win of the season and sophomore Jaime Schultz picked up his third save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

“The bullpen was outstanding today,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “It started with two freshmen, Joe Goodman and Will Resnik and Kyle Wigmore and Jaime Schultz kept it going. We played error-free baseball for the first time since the season opener and it was a key to the win.”

Goodman inherited a bases loaded situation in the fifth inning and got the first batter he faced to foul out to first base to end the threat. He pitched two more perfect innings with two strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win.

The Panthers trailed 3-1 in the sixth inning when Devin Bujnovsky started a rally with a one-out double down the right field line. Dayton starter Kyle Coenen hit the next batter, Ryan Retz, and was removed from the game. Parker Schrage came in from the bullpen to face Mike Miedzianowski. The freshman singled to left field to score Bujnovsky. Ryne Rush tied the game, 3-3, with a single to left center that bring home Retz. Freshman Josh Spano grounded out to third base but Mel Skochdopole bobbled the ball, allowing Miedzianowski to score the go-ahead run.

Coenen went 5-1/3, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and one strikeout in his first start of the year for the Flyers. Schrage took the loss, his second of the season, allowing one unearned run on two hits in 1-2/3 innings of work.

Resnik got the first two outs of the eighth inning and Wigmore recorded the third, setting up the save situation for Schultz. Schultz walked the leadoff batter before striking out Dayton catcher Josh Jeffery. Ian Hundley grounded in to a double play to end the game. Schultz has converted all three save opportunities this season.

High Point starter Jacob Newberry allowed three runs on seven hits in 4-2/3 innings of work. He walked three and struck out three in the game.

Rush went 3-4 in the game with one RBI and Miedzianowski was 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Bujnovsky also went 2-3 in the game with a run scored and one RBI. Spano picked up his first collegiate hit with a single up the middle in the eighth inning.

The Panthers return to Williard Stadium on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game against Virginia Tech.
