Shamia Brown grabbed five rebounds to move into first place on the HPU Div. I career rebounding list with 693 as the High Point University women's basketball team picked up a 60-53 win over Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon at the Millis Center.
“I think that this game was huge for us,” head coach Jennifer Hoover said. “We came out with great intensity and focus at both ends of the court. We were able to take confidence today out of our play on both defense and offense.”
Brown, HPU's Div. I career-scoring leader with 1,475 points, passed Katie O'Dell (2002-06) who held the previous record with 690 rebounds. The forward finished the game with 10 points to go along with her five rebounds making it her 14th-straight game scoring in double digits.
Cheyenne Parker led HPU in both scoring and rebounding in the win with 21 points on 9-13 shooting and nine rebounds. The sophomore center also blocked eight shots to set a new HPU Div. I single-season record with 94 rejections. Parker moved past
Mackenzie Maier (2007-11) who set the record with 91 in 2009-10.
Junior
Erin Reynolds joined Parker and Brown in double-digits for the game with 16 points in the game along with three assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Mariah Pietrowski led Presbyterian College with 17 points and eight rebounds.
The Panthers' win breaks a five-game losing streak and improves HPU's record to 15-11 overall and 10-5 in the Big South. It is only the fourth time since joining the conference that High Point has achieved double-digit wins. Presbyterian falls to 12-14 overall and 6-9 in the Big South.
After five minutes of action the two teams were still deadlocked at 8-8 when a long jumper by Reynolds started a 17-0 run by High Point to give the Panthers a 25-8 lead with 7:59 remaining in the half. HPU shot 3-3 from behind the arc during the run including two from Reynolds who had eight of High Point's 17 points.
High Point still led by 15, 30-15, with a little over a minute remaining before a 7-2 by the Blue Hose to close the half made the score 32-22 at the break. Karlee Taylor hit the big shot for PC with a three from the left side and Devin Fothergill hit a layup with six seconds left to help PC close to within 10.
Reynolds led all scorers at the half with 12 points of 5-6 shooting. Parker led all players in rebounds with five to go along with nine points. Pietrowski led the Blue Hose with eight points.
Presbyterian College continued its run after the break, outscoring HPU 7-2 in the opening minutes of the second half to close to within five at 34-29. Karlee Taylor connected on a three and both Pietrowski and Shondra Burnside scored down low for the Blue Hose forcing an early High Point timeout.
Following the timeout, Parker scored seven-straight points for the Panthers as High Point reopened its lead to 10, 41-31, with 13:54 left in the game.
The HPU lead would swing between five and 10 points the rest of the way as the Panthers refused to let PC get within a single possession, ultimately winning by seven, 60-53.
High Point forced 22 turnovers in the game and finished with 17 steals. Brown had five steals in the game while Parker and Reynolds each finished with three.
The Panthers will wrap up their regular season home schedule on Monday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. when they play host to the Winthrop Eagles. The game will serve as HPU's senior day as High Point will honor Brown, the team's lone senior, in a ceremony prior to the game.
