Jon Carlson gave the High Point University baseball team five solid innings but the Panthers fell to Dayton, 10-2, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Williard Stadium.
“The game changed dramatically when Carlson had to come out of the game after taking a line drive off his foot,” said head coach
Craig Cozart. “After that we were about as bad as we have been all season. We just have to forget tonight and come out tomorrow and win the series.”
Carlson took the loss to fall to 0-1 this season. He allowed two runs on one hit with four strikeouts in five innings of work. The only hit he gave up was a two-run homer to Dayton center fielder Bobby Glover in the fourth inning which gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead. He had retired the first nine batter of the game when he walked Brian Blasik to lead off the fourth. Blasik scored on the home run.
After the home run Carlson settled back in, retiring four in a row when Mel Skochdopole lined a ball back at Carlson that hit him in the foot.
Josh Spano was able to finish the play, throwing Skochdopole out at first and Carlson retired the next Dayton batter to end the fifth inning but did not return to the game.
Dayton extended their lead by scoring in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings off four different HPU relievers. The final three runs of the game, two credited to freshman
Harrison Phillips and one to senior
Nick Schumacher, were unearned due to three infield errors in the eighth inning.
Mike Hauschild earned the win for the Flyers, his first of the season, throwing eight innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out four Panthers in the game.
Sal Pezzino doubled and scored in the first inning to give HPU a brief 1-0 lead. The Panthers other run came in the seventh inning.
Ryne Rush was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Zach Hubbard.
High Point and Dayton will square off in the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior
Jacob Newberry will take the mound for HPU, looking for his first win of the season. He went 5-2/3 innings in the series finale against Army last Saturday, allowing just one unearned run with six strikeouts but did not factor in to the decision.
