The High Point University women's lacrosse team took an 18-8 loss to Virginia Tech on Wednesday afternoon at Moseley Field in Blacksburg, Va.
Sara Kuhlman scored four goals and
Chelsea Thompson had four assists for the Panthers.
"We started off the game slow but I thought we gained momentum going into halftime," said HPU head coach
Lyndsey Boswell. "Unfortunately we started the second half slow again and we couldn't execute our offense. Virginia Tech is a good team, they're fast and athletic. I'm disappointed with the loss but I think this game will help us prepare for the rest of our schedule moving forward."
Along with Kuhlman and Thompson, sophomore
Mackenzie Carroll scored two goals and
Grace Gaeng scored a goal and had five draw controls. Sophomore
Christie Dougherty had two assists, a draw and a ground ball. Senior
Heather Ziccarelli scored a goal and freshman midfielder
Stephanie Pazulski had three ground balls.
The Hokies were led by Brooke Martin's six goals while Megan Will scored four and Jessica Nonn scored three with two assists and eight draw controls. Morgan Widlake had a goal, three assists, four ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers for Virginia Tech. Two others grabbed three ground balls.
Virginia Tech scored seven of the first eight goals in the game before the Panthers were able to get settled for the final 12 minutes of the half. Nonn scored the first of three Hokie goals to start the game before Kuhlman got HPU on the board with 22:04 remaining.
Down 7-1, Gaeng scored on a setup from Dougherty with 12:18 left in the first half. HPU outscored Virginia Tech 6-4 to finish the half with Virginia Tech leading, 10-7. Carroll scored her goals in succession and Kuhlman added two more.
Coming out of the break, Virginia Tech got goals from Ryan Rotanz and Widlake in the first two minutes before Kuhlman scored her fourth goal of the game with 27:40 remaining. The Panthers couldn't get anything going on offense after that, however, as the Hokies scored the last five goals. Martin scored twice in a row before Will scored twice between 27:40 and 20:20 in the second half.
For the second game in a row, junior
Anna Wallingford and freshman
Julia Burns split time in goal for High Point. Wallingford played the first 22:22 before Burns came in for the final 37:38 and made six saves. Alex Gale earned the win in cage for Virginia Tech, making four saves.
High Point fell to 1-1 on the season while Virginia Tech improved to 2-0.
The Panthers are off for a week before hosting UC Davis next Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Vert Stadium. It's the first of three-straight home games for High Point and will be the first time the Panthers have faced UC Davis.
