Sean Wilson went 4-4 with three runs scored to lead the High Point University baseball team to a 12-5 win over Charlotte Tuesday at Williard Stadium. Junior
Ryan Retz pitched 6-2/3 innings for his first win of the season while also picking up a hit and one RBI in the victory.
“Retz really settled down after the first inning and gave us an outstanding outing,” said head coach
Craig Cozart. “That is the type of midweek start we will need all year. A lot of credit goes to associate head coach Bryan Peters who saw what our offense did over the weekend and pushed the right buttons to get much better production tonight. Charlotte is a quality club and this is a great win for us.”
Retz went 6-2/3 innings in his first start of the season, allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts to pick up the win. Senior Joe Yermal took the loss for Charlotte, lasting just two innings. He gave up four runs, one earned, with one strikeout.
HPU improved to 3-1 on the season and Charlotte stands at 3-1 after its first loss of the season.
Retz gave up a pair of runs in the first inning before settling in and keeping Charlotte off the board until the seventh. Charlotte center fielder Shane Brown had an RBI triple and scored a run for the 49ers in the first inning. Retz cruised through the middle innings, allowing just two more hits before running in to trouble with two outs in the seventh. The 49ers scored three more runs, two credited to Retz, in the seventh but sophomore
Zach Haile induced a ground ball off the bat of designated hitter Tony Montalbano to end the rally.
HPU took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first that they never gave up. Retz and freshman Mike Miedzianowsi had RBI singles in the frame and HPU capitalized on two Charlotte errors.
The Panthers added five runs in the fifth with the big hit coming off the bat of outfielder
Devin Bujnovsky. The junior drove the 0-1 offering from Micah Bryan through the left side to score Wilson and
Zach Hubbard.
Wilson added an RBI double in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch to make HPU's lead 11-2. Charlotte put up three runs in the top of the seventh and HPU added one in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman
Dane McDermott walked to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a single by
Andrew Bartlett.
Wilson finished the night 4-4 and reached base in all six plate appearances, getting hit by two pitches. Hubbard went 3-4 with two runs scored and one driven in. Bujnovsky and Miedzianowski both picked up two RBI.
High Point was hit by seven pitches in the game, tying the school's single game record. HPU was also hit seven times last year in a game against Presbyterian College.
Zach Haile pitched the final 2-1/3 innings of the game, allowing three hits with three strikeouts.
HPU heads down the road to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game against the Demon Deacons. Junior
Jared Avidon will start for the Panthers.
