The High Point University women's basketball team fell on the road to Campbell University by a score of 89-68 in Big South action on Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C. Junior Laura Whitt led HPU in the game with a career-high 21 points.

“I got to give a lot of credit to Campbell, they came out and were on fire today,” head coach Jennifer Hoover said. “We were trying to keep our focus on our defense and trying to make them take tougher shots. At the same time our offense wasn't clicking today for whatever reason. I take that on me and give credit to Campbell. In the second half we made a couple runs but couldn't get back into the game.”

Whitt shot 6-14 from the field and 5-8 from behind the arc. The five three pointers were a new career high for the junior. Whitt also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals on the day.

Cheyenne Parker finished with 20 points and a team-best eight rebounds while both senior Shamia Brown and sophomore Tayler Tremblay had 10 points in the contest.

Campbell was led by a trio of players who all finished with 18 points in Tonisha Baker, Katelyn Bass and Jazmine Cooper. The Camels shot 65.5 percent (38-58) from the floor, outscored High Point by a 46-22 margin in the paint and had 28 points off turnovers.

The loss is HPU's third in a row and drops the Panthers record to 14-9 overall and 9-3 in the Big South. Campbell improves to 13-10 overall on the season and 6-6 in the Big South.

High Point and Campbell traded baskets early in the game as the Panthers trailed by just one, 8-7, four minutes into the action. Parker controlled the paint early with two layups and Reynolds connected from behind the arc for HPU.

Campbell used hot shooting to pull away over the rest of the period, building its lead to 19, 47-28, at the half. The Camels shot a scorching 77.8 percent (21-27) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes to take control of the game. Bass led CU with 14 points on a perfect 7-7 shooting. Whitt led High Point with seven points at the break.

High Point managed to slowly trim the Campbell lead down to 12, 63-51, on a jumper by Brown with 10:24 left in the game, but Campbell came right back with six-straight points to reopen the lead to 18 at 69-41.

The Panthers were unable to close to any closer than 14, 71-57, the rest of the way, ultimately losing by 21, 89-68.

High Point is off the rest of the week before continuing its three-game road trip at Charleston Southern on Saturday, Feb. 18. HPU beat the Lady Buccaneers by a score on 84-58 in the two teams' first meeting at the Millis Center earlier this season. Tip-off for the contest is set for 2 p.m.
