Charleston Southern scored eight runs in the final three innings to beat the High Point University baseball team 13-6 Sunday at Williard Stadium. Seniors
Murray White IV and
Robbie Gilles each homered in the game.
“Obviously we are proud of our seniors,” said head coach
Craig Cozart. “They have done some really good things for this program. Unfortunately, we didn't send them out the way we would like in their last home series. There were some bright spots this weekend,
Corey Swickle gave us a quality start today and gave us an opportunity to win.
Mikel Rodenberg threw well in relief twice this weekend and Murray White got things going offensively with big home run.
Kyle Mahoney was tremendous behind the plate as always and it was nice to see
Robbie Gilles with two hits and a home run today. Those are the positives but it is hard to enjoy them when you get swept at home.”
The Panthers fall to 21-26 with the loss and 7-14 in Big South games. Charleston Southern moves to 25-23 (12-9 Big South) for the season.
Swickle took the loss for High Point and is now 3-4 for the season. Swickle went 6-1/3 innings, the longest outing of his career, allowing eight runs on 11 hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jesse Cadenhead earned the win for the Buccaneers, giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Corey Deighan pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing two runs on three hits for his seventh save of the season and second of the weekend.
Swickle walked the first batter of the game but Brantley Meier was erased by Mahoney trying to steal second base. Swickle then struck out the next five batters of the game. In the third inning Swickle gave up a walk and two base hits to load the bases for Tom Burkett. The right fielder gave CSU a 4-0 lead with his second home run of the season, a grand slam over the left field wall.
CSU added a run in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead but High Point rallied in the next two innings to cut Charleston Southern's lead to one run.
Preston Packrall singled to center with two outs and came around to score on a single off the bat of
Sal Pezzino.
Steve Antolik led off the sixth inning with a basehit up the middle. White homered to left field to score Antolik and make it a 5-3 lead. Gilles followed White with a solo homer to right field, his second of the season.
Swickle ran in to trouble in the seventh, loading the bases before he was relieved by
Drew Dades. Dades was unable to get an out, walking in one run and giving up a bases clearing double to Brandon McKinney. Dades left the game without recording an out and
Nick Schumacher came out of the bullpen for HPU. Over the next 1-1/3 inning Schumacher gave up four runs, three earned on four hits as the Buccs broke open a 13-4 lead.
White was hit by a pitch and scored in the eighth and Pezzino walked and scored in the ninth but the Panthers lost the game 13-6. Rodenberg pitched the final 1-1/3 scoreless innings.
Gilles, Pezzino and Packrall each finished the day 2-4 with a run scored and one RBI and Antolik was 2-5 with a run scored.
High Point will play its final home game Tuesday at 6 p.m. against UNC Greensboro.
