Winthrop mounted a late game rally for the third consecutive game to beat the High Point University baseball team 10-8 Sunday and sweep the series. HPU got a solid start from senior
Mike Caldwell who left the game with the lead before the bullpen gave up six runs in the final three innings.
“Winthrop deserves all the credit, they came in to our place and outplayed us all weekend,” said head coach
Craig Cozart. “We are going to have to do some soul searching this week and decide what type of team we want to be the rest of the season.”
The Panthers fall to 15-15 (3-6 Big South) with the loss while Winthrop improves to 14-13 (6-3 Big South). Mitchell Knox allowed two hits in 4-2/3 innings of relief for his second win of the season.
Spencer Andrews allowed four runs on four hits in just an inning of work for his first loss of the season.
It was a five-run eighth inning that gave Winthrop the lead in the game. Cam Walters led off the inning with a single, his fourth hit of the day, and came around to score the first of Winthrop's five runs. Andrews allowed two runs to score before Cozart brought
Mikel Rodenberg out of the bullpen. Rodenberg inherited runners at first and third and two outs and High Point hanging on to an 8-7 lead. TJ Olesczuk and Brett Thomas picked up RBI hits off Rodenberg to give Winthrop the 10-8 lead.
Walters finished the game 5-5 for the Eagles with two runs scored and one RBI.
High Point scored in the first four innings, to lead 8-2 early in the game.
Steve Antolik and
Ryan Retz had RBI-singles in the first inning.
Murray White IV doubled and scored in the three-run second inning and then picked up two RBI with a double in the fourth.
Caldwell game up two runs on three hits in the second inning but settled in until the sixth. With two outs in the sixth Adam Gliebe continued his hot weekend with an RBI triple to left center. Walters followed it with an RBI-single to end Caldwell's day.
Caldwell went 5-2/3 innings allowing four runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. It is his third consecutive start without a decision.
Retz went 4-5 with two RBI and a run scored and White finished the day 2-4 with two RBI.
High Point will play at Wake Forest on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and the Deacs will come to Williard Stadium for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday.
