The High Point University baseball team took a 10-3 road loss at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Sophomore
Steven Roche took the loss, his first of the season, allowing two runs on two hits in an inning of work.
The Panthers led early in the contest, scoring two runs in the first inning but the Spartans were able to win the battle of the bullpens as each team used the game as a designated staff day. UNCG used six pitchers in the game and High Point used seven.
The Panthers dropped to 21-23 on the season while UNC Greensboro moved to 22-17.
High Point took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Sal Pezzino and
Drew Geissinger led off the game with back-to-back singles.
Steve Antolik drove in Pezzino with a base hit through the left side.
Robbie Gilles drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Al Yevoli walked the first two Spartan batters of the game to end his day without recording an out. Roche came out of the bullpen and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases for first baseman Trevor Edwards. Edwards laced a triple to right field to clear the bases and give UNCG a 3-2 lead. Edwards scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 game.
Nick Schumacher pitched a scoreless second inning but UNC Greensboro tacked on two more runs in the third off
Adam Pratson.
Freshman
Mike Petilli made just his second appearance of the season, coming out to pitch the sixth inning. The first batter of the inning, Drew Gehringer reached on an error and scored on a two-out base hit by Cody Walker. He allowed one unearned run on two hits in two innings of work with one walk and two strikeouts. The Spartans led 9-2 at the end of seven innings.
Mike Gragilla picked up an RBI in the eighth inning, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Murray White IV who doubled to left field with one out. UNCG brought in right hander Colby Hyatt to face
Zach Tessier with the bases still loaded and Hyatt induced a double play to end the Panther' s threat.
Mikel Rodenberg allowed one run in the eighth as the Spartans cruised to a 10-3 win.
Pezzino finished the night 3-5 with a run scored and Tessier and Gilles were each hit by two pitches in the game.
The Panthers have a week off for exams before returning to Williard Stadium for a Big South series May 6-8 against Charleston Southern.
