Winthrop scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally past the High Point University baseball team 7-5 Saturday at Williard Stadium. The Eagles have come from behind to win each of the first two games in the series.

“It seems like the same old story with this team,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “15 hits should be enough to produce more than five runs. When guys came out of the bullpen and walked and hit batters in pivotal innings you are going to lose games.”

High Point led the game 4-3 going in to the eighth inning with senior Corey Swickle on the mound in relief. Swickle walked Max Vogel and hit TJ Olesczuk to bring Adam Gliebe to the plate. Gliebe hit his second three-run homer of the night to left field to give Winthrop the 6-4 lead.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the ninth. Eddie Rohan was hit by a Kyle Wigmore pitch and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Olesczuk.

The Panthers attempted a ninth-inning come back , loading the bases with one out but were only able to push across one run, falling 7-5 in the second game of the series.

Swickle took the loss, dropping to 2-3 on the season. He threw one inning, allowing three runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Murray White IV put High Point on the board in the third inning with a solo homer to left field, his second of the season. He finished the night 1-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Gliebe's first three-run homer of the game came off HPU starter Jared Avidon in the top of the fourth, scoring Olesczuk and Matt Lobacz who had both singled with two outs.

Avidon went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

HPU took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on four base hits. Kyle Mahoney, Robbie Gilles and Ryan Retz all singled and scored in the inning.

High Point put runners on in every inning but the second but left 10 on base. Retz finished the game 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Steve Antolik and Scott Glover were each 3-5.

High Point (15-14, 3-5 Big South) and Wilthrop (13-13, 5-3) will play the final game of the series Sunday at 2 p.m. Senior Mike Caldwell will pitch for the Panthers while Winthrop will send Matt Pierpont to the mound.
