East Carolina walks off with 5-4 win over High Point

East Carolina got a ninth-inning single from Jack Reinheimer to beat the High Point University baseball team 5-4 Wednesday at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Panthers led most of the game but ECU scored two in the seventh to tie the game 4-4 before Reinheimer came through with the walk off hit in the bottom of the ninth.

“When you play quality opponents on the road you have to separate yourself when the opportunities present themselves,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “We had chances to add to our score but we left ECU in the game and they came through in the end. We played really hard tonight and I am proud of the effort. We need to figure out a way to win on the road.”

Sophomore Ryan Retz gave up the ninth inning run for his first loss of the season. Brad Mincey got the win for East Carolina, pitching 2-2/3 hitless innings of relief. The Panthers drop to 7-7 on the season while ECU improves to 9-3.

Trent Whitehead doubled in the ninth, putting runners on second and third for Reinheimer. Reinheimer had entered the game in the eighth as a defensive substitution and came through with the single off the left field wall to win the game for the Pirates.

ECU tied the game 4-4 with two runs in the seventh off HPU starter Drew Dades. Whitehead had a two-RBI double down the left field line.

HPU scored a run in the first on a two-out single up the middle from Steve Antolik. 12 of Antolik's 18 RBI this season have come with two outs.

The Panthers added two more in the second. Mike Mercurio and Sal Pezzino each had RBI singles with Drew Geissinger and Preston Packrall scoring. Geissinger and Packrall both walked in the inning.

Two ECU runs in the third made it a one-run game until HPU plated one in the seventh to lead 4-2.

Dades allowed four runs, all earned, with one walk and one strikeout in 6-2/3 innings of work. Spencer Andrews relieved him, keeping ECU off the board for one inning.

Antolik finished the night 1-2 with one RBI. He was also intentionally walked twice. Mercurio went 2-5 with one RBI and one run scored. HPU left eight runners on base.

High Point returns home for a weekend series with North Carolina A&T. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
