The High Point University baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Dayton with a 3-2 win in the second game of Saturday's double header at Williard Stadium. The Panthers have won seven in a row, tying the longest win streak in the Division I era. Senior
Mike Caldwell picked up his second straight win, allowing one earned run in 7-2/3 innings of work.
Dayton loaded the bases in the ninth inning but was unable to push across the tying run. Sophomore
Ryan Retz struck out Joe Gayda to end the game and earn his first career save.
“Dayton is a quality club and it says a lot about our ball club to sweep them,” said head coach
Craig Cozart. “Caldwell has put together tremendous back-to-back outings and Retz was great in his first save situation. I am very proud of how hard this team fought all weekend in three very close games.”
High Point improves to 7-5 while the Flyers fall to 4-6 on the season. Tim Bury took the loss for Dayton, allowing three runs on five hits in 4-1/3 innings. The Flyers' bullpen allowed just one hit for the rest of the game.
Caldwell improves to 2-1 with the win. He pitched 7-2/3 innings, allowed two runs, one earned on seven hits. He struck out three without allowing a walk. After a two-out single in the first inning, Caldwell retired 12 in a row until another two-out single in the fifth inning.
“I just tried to mix all three of my pitches in for strikes,” Caldwell said. “I pitched to contact and my defense was solid behind me.”
Freshman
John Maloney took the mound in the ninth inning with High Point leading 3-2. He quickly got the first out but walked Zach Stewart and was replaced on the mound by Retz. Retz got the second out on a fly ball to right field before two Panther errors loaded the bases. Jimmy Roesinger reached on an error by
Mike Mercurio and Zach Lammers struck out swinging but the ball got away from catcher
Zach Tessier and Lammers was able to reach first. Retz kept his composure and got Gayda to swing and miss at strike three to end the game.
The Panthers scored their runs early, plating two in the third off Bury. Tessier was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning scored on a single up the middle by
Murray White IV. White came around to score when Retz doubled off the wall in left field.
High Point plated the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning. White doubled in
Sal Pezzino who had led off the inning with a base hit.
White finished the day 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
With the win HPU ties the program record for consecutive wins with the win over Dayton. HPU won seven in a row last season from Feb. 26 through March 7.
The Panthers will host Duke Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Williard Stadium. High Point beat Duke 9-3 last Tuesday in Durham, N.C.
