Spencer Andrews pitched four perfect innings of relief for his second win of the season.
The Panthers earn their first Big South Conference win of the season, improving to 13-9, 1-2 BSC while the Blue Hose fall to 13-7, 2-1 BSC with the loss.
“This was clearly a tough weekend,” said head coach
Craig Cozart. “We were able to get the win today but we have a lot of work to do in the next week. I was very glad to see Mahoney with the game-winning hit.
Mike Caldwell battled for five innings and Spencer was perfect out of the bullpen.”
Caldwell went five innings in his fifth start of the season, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits but left the game when the score was tied 3-3 and didn't factor in to the decision. Andrews gave the Panthers four perfect innings of relief, striking out two batter to improve to 2-0 this season.
“My main goal was to go after batters,” Andrews said. “As a team we were pretty angry about the results the first two days and I was glad to get in there and give my team a chance to win. I just threw strikes and relied on my defense to make plays behind me.”
Senior
Steve Antolik had a one-out single in the seventh inning and advanced to second when
Zach Tessier was hit by a pitch. With two outs Mahoney singled to right field, driving in Antolik to put the Panthers ahead 4-3.
The Panthers had an early 3-0 lead in the game.
Ryan Retz had an RBI double in the first and
Murray White IV drove Retz home with a single to center field. High Point added one more in the third when Tessier reached on a hit by pitch and came in to score on an RBI double by
Drew Geissinger.
A pair of Panther errors in the fourth inning allowed the Blue Hose to put up two runs and Presbyterian College designated hitter Tony Micklon hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to tie the game 3-3.
The Panthers went 6-2 in the eight-game home stand and hit the road for the next five games. HPU will play at North Carolina Wednesday at 6 p.m. and head to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a Big South weekend series at Gardner-Webb.
