Junior forward
Corey Law scored a career-high 21 points and tied his career high with 15 rebounds but the High Point University men's basketball team's shooting went cold in the final minutes and HPU took a 72-62 loss to Campbell on Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena in Buies Creek, N.C. The Panthers were within a point with under four minutes remaining.
"Give them all the credit, they came out and played really well after that stretch early in the second half when we were up nine," said HPU head coach
Scott Cherry. "We had some good looks late in the game but we didn't make shots, turned it over couple times and didn't execute. We'll get back to practicing and we'll get on the right path."
High Point fell to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the Big South while Campbell improved to 6-1 and 2-0 in the league.
Behind Law's 21 and 15, senior
Nick Barbour scored 15 points and sophomore
Xavier Martin scored eight points. Campbell's Darren White led all scorers with 28 points and Trey Freeman scored 15.
High Point led 31-29 at halftime and scored the first seven points in the second before Campbell called a timeout. Mikulic hit a jumper that rolled in, Law dunked for the second time in the game and Mikulic hit a trey from the right side to make it 38-29. After the timeout, Freeman hit a three-pointer to ignite a 17-4 Campbell run and the Camels led, 46-42, with 10:42 left in the game.
Barbour broke the run with a thee-pointer to make it 46-45 and a
Jairus Simms jumper made it 47-46 HPU. The teams traded the next seven baskets before Martin hit a pair of free throws that put HPU up, 53-51. Campbell's Harris dunked it again to tie the game and White hit a layup to make it 55-53 Campbell. HPU tied it at 55-55 on a pair of free throws by Barbour but the Panthers never led again.
In the closing minutes, Barbour drew a three-shot foul and made two, getting HPU within a point (60-59) and it was within two (62-60) when
Devante Wallace hit a free throw with 3:20 left. But the Panthers didn't hit a field goal the rest of the way and Campbell pulled away to a 72-62 final.
Campbell got out to an 8-3 lead to start the game before the Panthers came back to tie it, 12-12, on a three-point play by Law with 11:40 left in the first half. HPU took its first lead, 19-18, when Barbour hit a trey and HPU held it for the rest of the half. The Panthers led 24-20 when
Shay Shine hit a layup and consecutive HPU baskets by Law made it 26-22 and 28-24. Campbell's Andrew Ryan hit a three-pointer to make it 28-27, but Barbour followed with another to get HPU back up 31-27. White hit a jumper to get Campbell within two (31-29) at halftime.
High Point held Campbell to season lows of 72 points and 46.8 percent shooting.
