The High Point University men's basketball team led by 11 points in the second half, but a 14-2 Tennessee Tech surge forced overtime and the Golden Eagles topped HPU, 62-57, in overtime on Tuesday night at the Millis Center in High Point, N.C.
Nick Barbour led HPU in scoring for the third game in a row with 14 points.
"We've got to be able to stop runs like that at home," said HPU head coach
Scott Cherry. "We played well at times during the game but we need to get rebounds and make shots late. We're a good team and we've got good opponents coming into the Millis Center this season. Tennessee Tech is good, the Citadel is good, Wake Forest is good and Wofford is good. We've just got to get back to practicing and focus on the next game against Citadel this Saturday."
High Point dropped to 1-3 with the loss while Tennessee Tech improved to 2-2. The Golden Eagles were the preseason No. 2 pick in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Barbour hit three three-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. Junior forward
Corey Law scored 13 points with six boards and sophomore
Xavier Martin dished a career-high six assists.
Tennessee Tech guard Jud Dillard led all players with 18 points and 15 rebounds on the night, including 12 points in the second half. Senior shooter Kevin Murphy scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for TTU. The Golden Eagles outrebounded HPU 44-36 in the game and shot 52 percent (16-for-31) from the floor in the second half and overtime.
With High Point leading by one (30-29) in the second half, junior walk-on
Landon Harris came off the bench and provided a spark, hitting the next two baskets. That started HPU on a 12-2 run that included treys from
Branimir Mikulic and
Devante Wallace.
The Panthers led 47-36 when Law hit a pair of free throws with 8:28 remaining, but Tennessee Tech countered with its big run. A dunk by Dillard and a trey from Chase Dunn got TTU started and the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the second half, 50-49, when Murphy hit a pair of free throws. Law finished a three-point play to put the Panthers up by two with 1:37 to go.
In the final minute of regulation, Elliott grabbed the rebound of a Murphy jumper and HPU had a shot, but Martin's jumper was blocked out of bounds by Dillard. The Panthers turned it over and Murphy was able to hit the tying shot and force overtime.
After Tennessee Tech's Zac Swansey started the OT periot with a layup, an athletic rebound by Law led to a three-pointer by Shine that made it 55-54. That was HPU's final lead. Tennessee Tech countered with consecutive baskets and the Panthers couldn't get within two in the final minutes.
High Point University is back in action after Thanksgiving with a Saturday matchup against the Citadel at the Millis Center at 7 p.m. The Panthers will look to avenge a 71-63 loss to the Bulldogs in Charleston, S.C., last season. The game will be broadcast on 1230 AM and highpointpanthers.com and will have live video on the Big South Network.
