The High Point University women's basketball team got 18 points from junior Shamia Brown and 13 points and 13 rebounds from freshman Cheyenne Parker in an 80-66 win over Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon in the Millis Center.

Brown's 18 points led all scorers as the junior forward finished the game shooting 9-12 from the field in the contest. The double-double by Parker was the second in as many games for the freshman. The 6-4 senior has now scored 32 points and grabbed 29 rebounds in her last two contests. Sydnei Moss finished as CCU's leading scorer with 11 points on the day.

“All wins are great wins,” head coach Tooey Loy said. “We have been working really hard all week in practice and the adjustments we made worked. We got the ball down low to Cheyenne and Shamia and they did a great job finishing for us. It was an all-around great game and this is what we got to have for the rest of the year as we head down the stretch.”

The win breaks a two-game losing streak for the Panthers who improve to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in the Big South. Coastal Carolina falls to 6-11 on the season and 0-5 in the Big South.

The two squads traded baskets to start the game and with a little over 10 minutes left in the opening half the Panthers led by just one, 12-11. High Point began to slowly pull ahead over the remaining 10 minutes of the period thanks in large part to the combined effort of Brown and Parker. The two post players combined to score 20 points on 10 of 11 shooting as HPU opened a 40-30 lead at the break.

High Point shot 58.6 percent from the floor in the first half with 22 of the Panthers points coming in the paint. Along with her 10 points Parker finished the half leading all players with eight rebounds. Taylor Epley led CCU with eight points in the half.

The Panthers never allowed Coastal to pull back into the game in the second half. HPU built its lead to as large as 20 points with 3:38 remaining before ultimately winning by 14, 80-66. Brown continued to shoot the ball well in the second half, going 4-6 from the field for eight points. Senior LaTeisha Dean also scored eight points in the second half with six coming from behind the arc.

Dean and senior Jurica Hargraves each finished in double figures along with Brown and Parker. Hargraves had 13 points on the day with nine coming from behind the arc while Dean finished with 11 points off the bench. Senior Frances Fields dished out a season-high seven assists to lead all players.

The Panthers finished the game shooting 51.6 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from behind the arc. The 10 three pointers by HPU matched its season high.

The Chanticleers will continue to search for their first conference win on Monday when they travel to Lynchburg, Va., to take on the Lady Flames of Liberty.

High Point concludes its three-game home stand on Monday at 7 p.m., when the Panthers play host to Winthrop. The two squads faced each other three times last season, including a 68-65 overtime win by HPU in the Big South quarterfinals in which guard Erin Reynolds hit a three pointer at the buzzer to send the game to extra time.
