The High Point University men's soccer team put up 21 shots but was unable to find the net, falling 3-0 to St. Francis on Saturday afternoon at the JMU Harrisonburg Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va. Sophomore Fejiro Okiomah led HPU with seven shots in the match.

“Soccer is a strange game, the team with the best possession doesn't always win,” said head coach Dustin Fonder. “I thought our boys brought the right energy to the game today but we have to get better sharpness in our attack and more resiliency within our defense to keep zeros. We are possessing the ball but we just need some better timing and a better commitment to get on the end of passes.”

The Panthers controlled the play in the first half, outshooting the Red Flash 10-3 and forcing five saves by the St. Francis goalkeeper.

The Red Flash jumped out to the lead in the 52nd minute when Seamus Ryder fed Wayne Tiller with a throughball to the right side of the six-yard box. Tiller beat junior Michael Chesler to the ball and sent it into the far side netting for the goal.

Patrick Fleming scored the final two goals for St. Francis with the first coming on a penalty kick and the second on a hard shot from 8-yards out after splitting the centerbacks.

High Point finished the match with a 21-11 edge in shots but St. Francis' Thomas McWilliams made 10 saves to keep HPU of the board.

The Panthers fall to 1-1-0 on the season with the loss while St. Francis improves to 2-0-0

High Point will play its second game of the JMU Comfort Inn Invitational on Monday, Sept. 6, when the Panthers will play Rider at 5 p.m.
