The High Point University volleyball team took an early 2-0 lead but Appalachian State battled back to win the final match of the High Point University Classic 3-2 Saturday at the Millis Center. Senior Megan Smith was named to the All-Tournament team after posting her second double-double of the weekend.

“That is obviously not the way we wanted to go out this weekend,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “But I have to give credit to Appalachian State who made huge adjustments during the break. We put it too them in the first two sets but they adjusted and made big time plays when they needed too. We have to find a way to close out sets and come out with a win.”

Senior Audie Gonzalez had a kill late in the first set to tie the score at 23-23 before ASU's Alison Blasingame made two errors to give HPU a 25-23 win.

The Panthers dominated from the service line in the second set, with five service aces, three from Gonzalez. Gonzalez also had six kills in the set, all coming early in the frame that set the tone for HPU's 25-19 win and gave the Panthers a two set advantage going in to the break.

The Mountaineers kept High Point off balance for the rest of the match winning the final sets 25-18, 25-22 and 15-6 and forcing the Panthers to hit for a negative average in two of the final three frames.

Smith finished the match with 16 kills and 10 digs and was named to the HPU Classic All-Tournament team. Gonzalez had 11 kills and 19 digs as well as four service aces and two blocks.

High Point finished the opening weekend of the 2010 season with a 2-1 record and will head to Elon on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
