HPU notches season-best score at Coca-Cola/Wofford Invitational

DAY ONE RESULTS

The High Point University men's golf team finished the first day of the Coca-Cola/Wofford Invitational in eighth place out of 13 teams with a combined team score of 585 through two rounds Monday in Spartanburg, S.C. Freshman Chase Wilson turned in his best collegiate 36-hole score with a one-under 143 (70-73) to end the day in a tie for 11th.

“I felt pretty good about the way we played today; we shot two of the best rounds we have shot all season,” head coach JB White said. “We played pretty well but we still left a few shots out there. A chip here or a putt there could have gotten us to right around par. I am proud of the guys and the way they are playing and hope that this carries over into tomorrow and the conference championship next week.”

The Panthers shot 295 in the first round before turning in their best 18-hole score of the season with a 290 in the second round.

Junior DJ Dougherty tied his best 18- and 36-hole scores of season, shooting 76 in the first round and 72 in the second to finish the day in a tie for 36th with a total score of 148. Sophomore Curtis Brotherton finished in a tie for 46th after shooting 77 and 73 to end the day with a score of 150. Junior Evan LaRocque finished one stroke behind Brotherton in a tie for 51st with a two-round score of 151(72-79). Junior Nick Goins shot 152 (80-72) through two rounds to round out the HPU finishers in a tie for 55th.

East Tennessee State tops the team standings after shooting 285 and 277 to finish with a combined team score of 562. Charleston Southern had the best team score of the second round with a 276 to end the day in second place with a score of 569 (293-276). Host Wofford finished the day in third with a two-round score of 574 while USC Upstate shot 576 (292-284) to finish in fourth. Stetson finished two strokes behind USC Upstate in fifth place with a score of 578.

ETSU's Michael Stewart and Seamus Power finished 1-2 in the individual standings after two rounds. Stewart opened the day with a 72 before shooting the best round of any golfer on the day with a 66 in the second to finish with a 36-hole total of 138. Power led after the first round with a 68 through 18 and followed it with a 71 in the second round to finish in second, one stroke behind Stewart. Charleston Southern's Ross Thompson, Wofford's Mark Joye and USC Upstate's Josh Gallman all finished in a tie for third with a two-round total of 141.

HPU returns to the Country Club of Spartanburg for the third and final round of the Coca-Cola/Wofford Invitational on Tuesday. The Panthers will tee off with a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m.
