The Duke Blue Devils handed the High Point University baseball team a 13-1 loss Tuesday night at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Mike Caldwell (0-3) got the loss for HPU and Chase Bebout improved to 3-0 with the win for Duke.

“Quite simply our never our pitching never showed up,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “We were just never in the game. They jumped on us early and buried us. The big thing is that we move on quickly. We have four tough road games in the next five days.”

Four Duke pitchers held High Point to four hits, the fewest hits the Panthers have had in a game all season.

The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With Dennis O'Grady at first after singling to the shortstop, Jake Lemmerman took the 1-0 pitch from Caldwell over the right field wall for his fifth homer of the season.

Duke added four more in the second inning. Will Currier took Caldwell's first pitch down the left field line for the second home run of the game. With the bases loaded O'Grady doubled to left center, scoring all three base runners. Kyle Mahoney threw O'Grady out trying to steal third and Caldwell got out of the inning with a pop up to the shortstop.

HPU got one run back in the top of the third inning, making it a 6-1 game. Pablo Rosario doubled to right field with two outs and came around to score on a single to centerfield by Murray White IV.
Duke extended its lead to 13-1 in the fourth inning. Caldwell allowed six runs in the inning, two on a two-out homer by Marcus Stroman before he was relieved by Nick Schumacher. Schumacher walked the first two batter he faced before getting O'Grady to fly out to end the inning.

Caldwell went 3-2/3 innings, allowing 13 runs, 12 earned on 11 hits.

Schumacher was able to hold the Blue Devils scoreless in the fifth inning despite giving up a walk and a single. He lasted 3-1/3 innings allowing just two hits.

Steven Roche took the mound in the eighth inning, allowing two walks before striking out Joe Pedevillano to end the inning.

The Panthers (16-9, 3-3 Big South) will play at Western Carolina Wednesday (15-7-1, 3-5-1 Souther Conference) at 6 p.m.
