Brotherton and HPU lead after day one of WSSU Invitational

DAY ONE RESULTS

Sophomore Curtis Brotherton shot a one-under 70 to finish in a tie for first and the High Point University men's golf team shot a combined 303 to lead the team standings after one round at the 2010 WSSU Invitational on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C. Brotherton was one of six HPU golfers to finish the first day in the top eight.

“Curtis played very well with four birdies on the day,” head coach JB White said. “I was pretty pleased with the way that we played. We played well but I feel like we could have done even better. It is always nice to lead and I feel good about tomorrow. We have played the golf course twice now and we know where the trouble is and where we need to avoid to score well.”

Brotherton matched his career-best score in the first round to finish the day tied for first with Brevard College's Parker Lewis. It is the sophomore's fourth round under par this season. Junior Nick Goins shot an even-par 71 to finish just one stroke behind Brotherton in a tie for third. Junior Evan LaRocque scored a 79 through 18 holes and ended the day in a tie for seventh place. Junior DJ Dougherty turned in an opening round 83 to finish in a tie for 12th and freshman Chase Wilson shot a first-round 84, leaving him in a tie for 18th.

Three other HPU golfers competed as individuals on the day with senior Mark Hammond finishing fifth with an 18-hole score of 75 to lead the trio. Senior Hogan Nance shot an opening-round 77 and finished the day in sixth and freshman Dan Wayson shot a 79 in his first collegiate round to finish tied with LaRocque in seventh.

The Panthers ended the day atop the team standings with a combined team score of 303, two shots better than Brevard College which finished in second with an opening-round score of 305. Host Winston-Salem State shot 331 on the first day and finished in third place. NC Central and Hampton rounded out the team standings with scores of 344 and 366 respectively.

Both Brotherton and HPU will look to clinch their first wins of the season when they return to the Winston Lake Golf Course on Sunday. The second round is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
