Junior
Karo Okiomah was named NSCAA third-team All-American on Friday, becoming the first High Point University men's soccer player to earn All-American honors. Four other HPU players earned All-South Atlantic Region honors.
"I am extremely excited for Karo to garner this recognition," head coach
Dustin Fonder said. "He is a tremendous athlete with sound character and because of these attributes he has truly earned this award. During his recruitment I challenged Karo with the responsibility of becoming the face of our program and he has lived up to that. I am also extremely proud of our team effort in helping him win this honor."
Okiomah scored 12 goals in just 16 contests this season for HPU, including a stretch of seven games in which he scored at least one goal. The junior finished tied for the Big South lead in goals scored and just one point shy of the lead in points with 26, despite playing in five less games than either of the two conference leaders. The Big South Player of the Year,
Karo Okiomah scored five goals in five conference games. He was named Big South Player of the Week on Nov. 5 after scoring three goals and recording two assists in wins over UNC Greensboro and Richmond.
Okiomah was also named first-team All-South Atlantic Region and was joined by senior
Scott Rojo and sophomore
Fejiro Okiomah, who were named to the second team, and sophomore
Shawn Sloan and redshirt-sophomore
Ryan Bennett, who were both named to the third team.
High Point joins ACC squads Maryland and Virginia as the only teams to have at least five players selected to the All-South Atlantic Region teams. The five selections are a new high for HPU whose previous best was two selections last season when
Karo Okiomah and
Matt Tuttle were named to the third team.
“This is another big step in the development of our program here at High Point University,” Fonder said. “To have these players earn such prestigious honors is humbling for our group but it also sets a new standard of where we want to be. Five is our new standard so next year we will raise the bar and try to go for six.”
Rojo finished the season tied for the national lead in assists with 17, an HPU all-time single-season record. The senior finished fourth in the Big South with 25 points, two shy of the conference leaders. Rojo notched four games with multiple assists, including two games with three assists. He was named Co-Big South Player of the Week after a one goal, three assist performance in a 4-0 win over Gardner-Webb.
Fejiro Okiomah finished the season tied for the Big South lead with 27 points on 12 goals and three assists. The sophomore scored seven goals in the final six games of the regular season to charge into a tie for the Big South.
Fejiro Okiomah was named twice named Big South Player of the Week. First on Sept. 14 after a two goal, one assist week, then again on Nov. 2 after scoring in wins over Coastal Carolina and VMI to help High Point secure the Big South Regular Season title and a perfect 8-0-0 conference mark.
Sloan was fourth on the Panthers and fifth in the Big South with 24 points on eight goals and eight assists in 2010. The sophomore led the Big south with 17 points on five goals and seven assists in Big South games. Sloan finished tied for second in the Big South in assists. He was named Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 19 after scoring a goal and recording two assists to help HPU to wins over Radford and UNC Asheville.
Bennett earned his first all-conference honor after starting every game of the season at left back and recording three goals and an assist. Bennett helped the High Point defense allow just 19 goals in 21 games, the fewest allowed by HPU in the school's DI era. High Point allowed more than one goal only five times all season and held opponents to an average of just four shots on goal per game.
