The High Point University women's basketball team cruised to a 78-23 win over Southern Virginia on Tuesday evening in the Millis Center. Sophomore
Erin Reynolds and freshman
Tayler Tremblay each scored 14 points in the win to lead a balanced HPU attack.
“Our goal was to play at a high intensity even though we weren't playing as tough an opponent as we faced this weekend and I think we were able to do that,” head coach Tooey Loy said. “One of the things I really liked was that we did a better job taking care of the ball in transition which was a problem for us in our first two games. This was a breather game to help get us ready to play nine of our next 10 games on the road.”
High Point jumped out to a big lead early, scoring the first 22 points of the game before the Knights' Nicole Tolman broke through with a three to put Southern Virginia on the board with 10 minutes left in the first half. Senior
Amy Dodd scored six points for the Panthers with a three and three free throws while Reynolds, Tremblay, junior
Shamia Brown and sophomore
Jazmin Cromartie all added four points early in the contest.
The Panthers continued to push on offense in the final minutes of the first half and entered the halftime break with a 38-9 lead. Dodd finished the period with nine points to lead High Point and Reynolds and Cromartie each chipped in with six. Tolman finished the half with five points to lead the Knights.
High Point continued to pull away in the second half, stretching its lead past 40 points, 62-21, with eight minutes left in the contest and ultimately winning by a score of 78-23. Tremblay led all scorers in the second half with 10 points.
Dodd and Cromartie joined Reynolds and Tremblay in double-digits with 11 and 10 points respectively. Senior
LaTeisha Dean had 12 rebounds and five assists to lead HPU in both categories. Tolman's finished with five points to lead Southern Virginia.
The Panthers forced 35 turnovers in the game and scored 49 points off those turnovers. HPU had 21 steals including a team-best six from senior
Frances Fields. The High Point defense forced the Knights to shoot just 17.4 percent (8-46) from the floor on the night.
The 55-point win for High Point is the largest since the Panthers beat Emory & Henry 125-45 on Nov. 16, 2008.
High Point improves to 2-1 on the season with the win while Southern Virginia falls to 0-4.
HPU will hit the road for the first of seven-straight games away from the Millis Center this Friday, Nov. 19, when the team travels to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood. The Panthers will attempt to avenge the 76-68 loss they suffered to the Lancers in the Millis Center last season. Tip-off for the contest is set for 7 p.m.
