The University of High Point women's soccer team managed a season-high five shots on goal but was unable to find the back of the net as the team fell to the College of Charleston, 2-0, in Vert Stadium Friday night. Senior goalkeeper
Marisa Abbott (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) added five more saves to her Big South leading total in the loss.
"I thought we played our best soccer game this season," said head coach
Marty Beall. "We created some better chances at goal against a very good College of Charleston team. We are a little disappointed we didn't get a better result with the way that we played. Our possession was fantastic at times and our team defending was pretty good. I thought we deserved a little more, but credit to College of Charleston for getting the goals they needed."
The two teams seemed evenly matched for much of the night with the total shot count finishing at 14-13 in the Cougars' favor. The 13 Panther shots was a season high and more than the team had in its first four games combined. Sophomore
Laura Shupe (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) led the charge with two shots on goal in the game.
The College of Charleston took the lead in the 12th minute with a quality strike by Hope Atkinson from about 25-yards out on the right wing. The sophomore lofted the shot to the far post just out of the reach of Abbott to secure a 1-0 lead.
High Point forced the action in the attacking third, with seven shots and two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, but the score remained 1-0 at the half.
The Cougars sealed the game in the 53rd minute on a header from just in front of the goal by Maryam Buazza. High Point tallied five shots including three on goal after the second goal but the team couldn't get on the board.
The Panthers return to Vert Stadium for their second game of the High Point University Invitational on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. when they take on regional-rival Elon University. Elon lost to Temple, 1-0, in the opening game of the High Point University Invitational earlier in the day Friday.
